This is the Union Missionary Baptist Church. It was organized in 1869 by Henry McCrea and 12 survivors of the Clotilda slave ship. It started as Stone Street Baptist Church and was renamed in 1903 as Union Baptist Church. #AFRUSA20

Found it fascinating that the church initial sign was carved onto the brick of the church reminds me of the engravings of the tombstone at Plateau Cemetery @dffaaht1 #Afrusa20

This is the Old Plateau Cemetery. This picture was taken from the road and to the left of the entrance. This cemetery is where the survivors of the Clotilda are buried and located in Africatown. #AFRusa20

@JanuaryAmya It was also so mentioned that the decorum and architecture was also used to symbolize wealth. They described it as a “show house” . It was originally intended to be a summer home that they would host in the months they spent in mobile. #AFRusa20

This is fascinating because they are similar to the Azalea Trail Maids in Mobile #AFRusa20

These Belles are apart of the Oakleigh Belles Leadership Program who represent the Historic Mobile Preservation Society, unrelated to our assignment but I just thought their dresses were lovely! #AFRusa20

People of color in Mobile, whether free or not, needed to carry notes with them if they walked around alone. Free people usually had theirs made out of leather so it'd last longer. Imagine being "free" but still having to have a hall pass for the rest of your life... #AFRusa20

It was the fact that New Orleans creole descendants( as well as Mardi Gras) was more popularized there than in Mobile. So interesting with the connection of those two cities. #AFRusa20

Many slaves and hired help in Mobile would travel to their owners home, more than like they would travel from (Texas Hill) known now as Texas Street. #Afrusa20

Due to a serious budget cut the the barracks is not part of the original tour at the Oakleigh home. But glad we were able to view it and read on the history and restoration of the building #Afrusa20

The Gaither family stayed working in the Oakleigh home for 3 generations. This lets me know how blacks would would be attach to a family for many years and lack of job opportunity that was available as well #Afrusa20

Many owners were told by their slaves to paint their porch or ceilings blue to keep evil spirits away as it was a tradition Africans would practice back at their home this is an example at @oakleighmansion #Afrusa20

Fact: Mobile had the largest population of free Blacks and more than likely they were Creole because most men settlers would be in the area than European women so the men would have children with African and the Natives. #AFRusa20 (only thought creole individuals were from N.O.)

These images shows how the owners would take photos with the hired help, these pictures were expensive to take and took at least 2 minutes to properly take a clear photo so more than likely these images were for safekeepings #AFRusa20

Roper selling a 30 year old and two 17 year olds. Likelyhood is he lied about their ages to get the best price possible showing "economics command techniques." #AFRusa20

It's awesome to see the Irwins taking a photo with the Gaithers shortly after the war. It shows just how close the families were. It relates to the quote "values command politics" to explain why they were so willing to help the Union soldiers. #AFRusa20
