Maybe #ATEAC critics didn’t think diplomacy is the right model for thinking about #digitalGovernance, but I think the #GDPR #AIA #DSA etc are more or less treaties — not with equals, and mostly set by one side, but the other side are free to choose whether to continue commerce.

I feel this way about big and even SME tech all the time. A lot of people who couldn’t understand why I ultimately agreed to #ateac couldn’t see this. I feel that diplomacy is the only solution, though the irony of letting Google select (some of) the diplomats was not lost on me.

I have no idea where @timnitGebru stood on #ateac, but several thousand "ethical" googlers are exactly why I know less about how Google thinks than I could, and I have less influence over Google than I might. 1/2

Facebook being VERY careful to clarify the rationale and process for their board members, clearly learning from observing Google #ATEAC. Tho the ATEAC announcement also was reasonably clear IMO, it wasn’t transparent enough for how edgy the council was.
