Top Tweets for #Addisstandard
Congratulations to the entire #AddisStandard team.
This recognition belongs not only to those who are here today, but also to everyone who contributed to building Addis Standard over the years. Everyone who believed in the mission and carried it forward.
Most of all, it belongs to those who chose to stay and fight the good fight when the pressure was at its highest; when some of the very institutions entrusted with protecting the safety and security of citizens became sources of intimidation; when doing journalism seemed impossible, and when the easier choice would have been to simply walk away.
You stayed not because you were untouchable, but because you refused to let fear define your profession. You believed that this brand was worth the cost, that facts matter, and that the public deserves to know.
There were moments when everything seemed impossible. Yet you showed up, day after day, and kept faith in the idea that what you do matters.
This award is a recognition of that perseverance and a reflection of years of sacrifice, resilience, and quiet courage that often go unseen.
So, here I am to say thank you for holding the line. Thank you for believing. And thank you for staying.
Congratulations again on this well-deserved recognition!โค๏ธ๐๐ฟ๐๐ฟ

When Victims Are Branded as Perpetrators: @addisstandard 's Disinformation on the #AmharaGenocide
The recent #AddisStandard โreportโ alleging that #Fano were responsible for the massacre of Amhara civilians in Horo Guduru Wollega is a grotesque inversion of reality. To blame Fano, a grassroots self-defense force born out of necessity in response to state-sponsored atrocities, is akin to claiming that Himmler was decimating German villages while in truth he was orchestrating the deportation of Jews to the gas chambers. The comparison is stark because the distortion is deliberate: it seeks to frame the persecuted as the persecutors, thereby sanitizing the crimes of those truly responsible.
The facts on the ground are unmistakable. For years, Oromia special forces and OLA insurgents, operating under the toxic doctrine of #Oromumma, have committed gruesome atrocities against Amhara communities in Wellega and beyond: massacres, displacements, and systemic terror. Independent investigations and eyewitness testimonies have consistently identified state and regional actors as the architects of this violence. Yet Tsedale Lemma, the owner of Addis Standard and long known for her venomous hostility toward the Amhara, has perfected the craft of turning victims into villains. By weaponizing journalism to spread disinformation, her outlet serves not as a voice for truth but as a shield for impunity.
At its core, this is about more than one distorted article, it is about the battle over narrative in the face of genocide. The Amhara people, by far the most persecuted community in Ethiopia over the past three decades, are enduring systematic extermination, their villages razed, their monks slaughtered, their children starved. To smear Fano, the very force that emerged to defend them, as aggressors is not merely dishonest, it is morally bankrupt. History will remember who stood against genocide and who, like Addis Standard, chose instead to enable it by projecting guilt onto the victims.

Public notice regarding federal police raid on Addis Standard and mass confiscation of electronic devises
This is a public notice regarding a coordinated police raid on April 17, 2025, targeting both the private residence of a senior staff member and the offices of Addis Standard, by the federal police.
We would like to reiterate that although the detained staff members were released, the continued seizure of a wide array of personal and professional electronic equipment - including laptops, mobile phones, hard disks, and CPUs - has not only disrupted our operations but are a cause for alarm.
The confiscated electronics remain in police hands, leaving our communication channels vulnerable to misuse. Although our main digital credentials remain secure, we cannot guarantee the integrity of any messages or emails sent from the compromised devices.
This opens the door to potential impersonation, misinformation, or attempts to incriminate our team members through unauthorized access or manipulation of data.
In such a volatile environment, the use of these devices outside our control presents serious risks not only to our staffโs safety but also to the integrity of our journalistic work.
We call for urgent attention to this matter and reiterate our commitment to pursuing all legal and peaceful avenues to protect our team and uphold our integrity to defend the freedom of the press in Ethiopia.

#Editorial: Before the silence turns to strife: The government must heed the voices of peoplesโ healers
In its latest editorial, #AddisStandard calls on the #Ethiopian government to urgently address the longstanding and legitimate demands of the countryโs medical professionals, cautioning that โthe writing is on the wallโ as a nationwide strike looms on May 11.
The editorial stresses that the ongoing peaceful demonstrations are not acts of rebellion, but โthe final pleas of a profession that has given its all and received next to nothing in return.โ
The editorial urges authorities to recognize the dire conditions under which healthcare workers have labored, amid war, crumbling infrastructure, and systemic neglect. Informed by its own years - long coverage, the editorial highlights shocking reports of medical staff dying for lack of care or resorting to begging. Their demands - adequate pay, safety, professional recognition, among others - are not luxuries, but โbasic professional expectations in any society that claims to value human life.โ
This is not, the editorial insists, โa political stunt,โ but a demand for dignity, justice, and survival.
The silence from the government will echo in hospital corridors and emergency rooms, where help used to be. This publication calls on the state to respond not with threats, but with negotiation and action, urging leadership to rise to the moment: โLet it not be remembered that Ethiopia gambled with the health of its people when it could have chosen to invest in those who hold their lives in their hands.โ The time to act, is now, before silence gives way to strife.

Federal Police Raid on #AddisStandard: Implications for Cryptocurrency trading in #Ethiopia
The Decentralized News Network (DNN) token saw a sharp decline of 7.5% within the first hour following the news
The raid's impact extended to the cryptocurrency market, particularly affecting tokens associated with free speech and digital rights
On April 17, 2025, a significant event unfolded with the federal police conducting a coordinated raid on Addis Standard, a prominent Ethiopian news outlet. The raid, which targeted both the private residence of a senior staff member and the offices of Addis Standard, led to the mass confiscation of electronic devices. (Addis Standard, April 18, 2025).
This event occurred at 09:00 AM local time and was widely reported, drawing attention to potential implications for press freedom and digital security in the region. The raid's impact extended to the cryptocurrency market, particularly affecting tokens associated with free speech and digital rights.
For instance, the Decentralized News Network (DNN) token saw a sharp decline of 7.5% within the first hour following the news, dropping from $0.12 to $0.11 at 10:00 AM UTC (CoinMarketCap, April 17, 2025). Concurrently, trading volumes for DNN surged by 150%, reaching 2.5 million tokens traded in the same hour (CoinGecko, April 17, 2025).
This incident also affected the broader crypto market, with Bitcoin experiencing a slight dip of 0.5% to $67,000 at 11:00 AM UTC, reflecting broader market sentiment (TradingView, April 17, 2025). The raid's timing and nature also sparked discussions about the role of cryptocurrencies in protecting digital rights and privacy, leading to increased interest in privacy-focused cryptocurrencies like Monero (XMR), which saw a trading volume increase of 30% to 10,000 XMR traded at 12:00 PM UTC (CryptoCompare, April 17, 2025). The event's ripple effect on the crypto market highlighted the interconnectedness of global events and digital assets.
