In the “excitement” yesterday about the National Security Strategy & the continuing warmongering bluster by the Government, I forgot that it was #Adlestrop Day, a poem about a halt made on June 24, 1914, mere weeks before the flower of Britain’s youth was sent to a pointless war.

I was young teen when I first heard of #Adlestrop. I didn’t understand the poem, but I loved the name and wanted to visit. Today I did; and saw the sign and the birds that sang were skylarks.

I’m giving some talks on Astronomy at @KitebrookSchool tomorrow, staying in Moreton in Marsh. Today, I set myself a 14 mile potter to #Adlestrop, #Chastleton Barrow hill fort and @NTChastleton. Birdsong, hot dry winds and wooded blue hills rolling in all directions. Lovely.
It's one of the nation's favourite poems written as a love letter to the beloved home, our soldiers were fighting for in the Great war.

Between here & Moreton-in-Marsh on 11 Apr 1933 GWR track worker John Hardiman was killed.
No-one witnessed it, but it evidence suggested he stopped to work on the track & was hit by a train he didn't hear coming.
