Let's count the ways ableism creeps in to conference planning.
1) No lead time for poster prep.
This lessens people's likelihood of making accessible content, leading to #autocraptions or #NoCaptions increasing the burden on or excluding participants who use captions for access
This is why stenographers are up in arms about #autocraptions. As for what was said, we are still debating.
If you believe people deserve quality access and you know somebody that wants to get into captioning, tell them check out NCRA A to Z, Project Steno, or Open Steno.
Captioning consumers, if you’re noticing a drop in quality in broadcast captions it’s likely because they’re failing to use qualified stenographic captioners. A recent job posting for captioner was well below market rates.
