A single dose drops viral loads within 24hrs far more than Osteltamivir.
Most GP’s are unaware of this drug.
It could be a real lifesaver with mutant H3N2 seasonal influenza or if pandemic H5N1 BirdFlu breaks out.

If I had severe Flu A I would want IV Peramivir and oral #Baloxavir . In NSW I can get peramivir, but not Baloxavir. There is data that the combination improves outcomes relative to Australia’s standard of care (Tamiflu). 🤷♂️🤷♂️

2.Antiviral medications:
✴️#Peramivir is the only effective intravenous medication. It is TGA approved, and available in Australian hospitals on a limited basis . I’m unsure of stockpiles.
✴️#Baloxavir (Xofluza) will likely be the only effective oral therapy. It too is TGA approved, but remains unavailable in Australia. Roche has never marketed it, and it is unavailable at the public or private hospital level. I’m unable to find out whether any is stockpiled . It will save many lives and hospital admissions . To me, this is Australia’s one weakness. It is not too late to beef up this line of defence. We will need political and medical pressure to do this.
✴️#Tamiflu (osteltamivir) will likely be ineffective, and is only available orally. We will only know resistance patterns once the flu arrives, but it is my opinion that it will not be effective. Tamiflu remains the only available oral antiviral medication available to the public in Australia.
✴️Does any country have enough #Baloxavir?
✴️Australia certainly doesn’t.
Has anyone placed big orders with #Roche or #shinogi?
Maybe a company spokesperson can say whether their product capacity is being ramped up?

✴️#H1N1 acquiring #osteltamivir resistance. We saw this in 2011.
✴️#Baloxavir resistance has not been documented. Thus antiviral will need to be stockpiled.
✴️#Peramivir ok (for now). Remember, this is a neuraminidase inhibition like osteltamivir.
✴️Multiple other #birdflu viruses recently reported: #H5N2 (human, Mexico), #H5N5 (birds, Japan).
✴️#Birdflu remains a moving target (literally).
✴️We need to urgently prepare with #vaccine acceleration , and #antiviral production and stockpiling.
✴️The #WHO needs to declare a #PHEIC and the #CDC needs to up their #IRAT score. We need leadership from the top.
