So looking through the Philly monthly meeting records in 1737 it occurred to me that the Quaker disownment of #BenjaminLay happened exactly one week after the Walking Purchase (aka the “running walk” aka James Logan’s dispossession of the Lenape through outright fraud) 1/
@torstrick "No Justice No Peace" was a powerful cry in 17th century by badass US abolitionists when they did sharp guerrilla theater and publicly & loudly called out atrocities of slave owners. #BenjaminLay and others used #NoJusticeNoPeace before & after public actions. Bring it BACK!!
After hearing about him on @TheRestHistory #BenjaminLay is my new hero. A Quaker born 1682 he was a feminist, vegan animal rights activist and most famously, a passionate abolitionist. He was also a hunchback standing at only just over 4 feet.
