I gave a lightning talk at #BugBash 2026, sharing the stage with people whose work shaped how I think about distributed systems. Still processing that.
Wrote up why the correctness decade has started, and why you trust the simulator, not Claude ๐

Talking at #BugBash was already an achievement for me, but appearing in @muratdemirbas's blog? Wild.

BugBash'26 Day 2

We asked โWhat makes distributed systems so hard?โ
A naive question because it implies a singular answer.
- Peter Alvaro, #bugbash
Weโve made coding infinity-times faster and our throughput has only doubled.
Will Wilson, @AntithesisHQ #bugbash
Extremes of software correctness used to be niche.
Now that testing is 99% of the work, itโs going mainstream.

I will be presenting a lightning talk about how we borrowed #foundationdb simulation framework in #rustlang

HALF OFF NEW MEAP!
Bug Bash: Exploratory software testing & selected titles: https://t.co/RJ20ZEPAHt
Learn how to run a time-boxed testing event with participants from across an organization. #testing #bugs #bugbash
A โbug bashโ is a time-boxed exploratory testing event designed to find errors, integration issues, and usability problems before a major release. In this practical guide, youโll learn how to recruit the right players, structure the event, and adopt the โgame masterโ skills to keep your bug bash on track. Youโll go step by step through every phase, from getting leadership and dev team buy-in to the post-bash triage and fixes.

All this is made possible thanks to the great work of @PierreZ who built our foundations for layers simulation at @clever_cloud . If youโre interested in the topic, he will be speaking on this at the next #bugbash conf organized by the awesome folks at @AntithesisHQ #MateriaDB
Serverless Kafka Topic as a Service. I'm getting good with the perf I want. Thread per Core, io_uring, arena buffers, in-memory or FoundationDB storage (selected at topic creation), integrated with @FoundationDB simulation like all Materia layers. Now let's run simulation cycles

One more #BugBash speaker announcement!
Matt Barrett, Co-founder & CEO at @WeAreAdaptive, will be talking about the architecture and testing that go into their implementation of the Raft algorithm. It ain't easy, even if they make it look easy.
Tickets below.
Why does software break more often than, say, airplanes, or buildings? Just one of the questions we'll be looking diving into at #BugBash, and here to represent team buildings, @_brianpotter of the @IFP and the incredible Construction Physics substack!
If there's one approach to reliability that seems even harder than DST, it's probably formal verification. So @ankushpd, Principal Scientist at @Snowflake, is coming to demystify them at #BugBash!
There's a whole seminar on formal methods this year - early bird sales closing end of Jan!
It wouldn't be #BugBash without some DST - so @chaitybhandari from @TigerBeetleDB is coming to talk about protocol-aware deterministic simulation!
I couldn't make it to the inaugural #Bugbash last year, but I've just made arrangements to attend the 2026 edition.
This feed is just going to be full of #BugBash speaker announcements for a minute... today we're excited to share that Frank McSherry, CTO and Chief Scientist at @MaterializeInc and author of one of the most influential database papers of the last decade, will be coming!
Registration link, and the paper in question, below. If you haven't read it, you really should.
#BugBash speaker announcement time!
First up, Peter Alvaro!
Peter leads the Disorderly Labs research group at @ucsc and is an Amazon Scholar at @amazon. His research focuses on using data-centric languages and analysis techniques to build and reason about data-intensive distributed systems. He is a recipient of the @NS CAREER Award, the @facebook Research Award, the @usenix ATC 2020 Best Presentation Award, the @sigmod 2021 Distinguished PC Award, the SoCC 2025 Best Paper award, and the UCSC Excellence in Teaching Award.
We're honored and excited that he's joining us to give his first off-campus talk in several years. Early bird rates while they last, registration link below!
Most developers take for granted that software's going to have bugs. But why?
A new perspective to start the new year. This was Will's opening talk at #BugBash last year - join us on April 22-24 for this year's edition!

David MacIver is the primary author of the world's most widely used property-based testing tool, the #Hypothesis library for #Python. On this episode of the #BugBash podcast, he chats with @akshayshah and Will Wilson about shrinking, context windows, and making testing tools usable. Full episode links below.
By the way, he also just joined our engineering team. Welcome aboard @DRMacIver!
