Both fair points. When investing in #LICs or #CEFs look at the premium or discount to NTA and try to buy at NTA or a discount. When your researching #LICs or #CEFs look at
NTA, share price,dividend paid and tax paid.
$WAR currently trading at discount to NTA. NTA is approx $1.29.
$WAM has been paying Div FF of 10% on assets which requires earnings pretax 14.3% pa plus $WAM is now trading at NTA and it was at a 25% premium at one point
I was asked by a journalist my thoughts on listed funds management businesses and listed closed end funds (#LICs or (#CEFs)
1. Re Listed Fund Managers - like any listed company if you have a strong and growing business being listed is great as you get access to capital cheaply and your business is valued highly. Look at the success listed managers like KKR, BlackRock etc.
2. #LICs or #CEFs have been around globally since 1868 and they will continue for hundreds of years as their structure is superior to open ended unlisted funds. As new managers turn up and expect to reap the rewards of the structure without committing resources to support their new #LIC or #CEF they will continue to fail while the groups @WilsonAssetMgmt et al that commit resources continue to prosper.

Hi James, yes I’m a non executive director. I always find it best to speak to management. Give them a call and if you have any problems come back. Re discount it’s a supply demand equation. I find for #Lics or #Cefs there are 4 things you need to focus on
1. Performance
2. Consistent Dividend
3. Treat all shareholders fairly
4. Have a comprehensive shareholders engagement/Marketing strategy ( as it’s supply/demand and in the end you want to get to equilibrium which is NTA)
