Today we're open-sourcing #CaptainCode ๐ ๐ซถ
Captain picks the right AI model for each prompt and runs it from one terminal, on your machine. It drives the @claudeai Code, @OpenAI Codex, @xai @grok and @Cursor CLIs you already pay for, and gives you access to the most capable open-weight models through @OpenRouter, @nvidia NIM and @huggingface.
Why we built it? We no longer knew which model to use for what, we were under-using our subscriptions, and we wanted to hand more work to cheaper, capable open models. More than 25% of my prompts go to open-weight models as a result, and counting!
How does Captain work? It leverages the newly released @typesafeai Jev model to triage every task in milliseconds. Then it routes on quality, cost and latency, with the outcome logged locally for iterative improvements. When a model hits its usage limit, it reads the reset time and carries the work, context included, to the next relevant available model. When you type /oss, the task goes to open models only.

For my developments I built #captaincode, sitting on top of @opencode. It drives my local CLIs (Claude, Codex, Cursor) and opencode-routed models (Grok, Gemini, DeepSeek, GLM, Kimi, Qwenโฆ). Happy to open source it if that can help.
A director model plans the task, then picks the right worker for that prompt by looking at quality ร cost ร latency, ranked on scorecards from runs it actually did.
The handoff part you're asking about is the piece I care most about:
โข a model hits its limit โ captain parses the reset time from the provider's own message, benches that leg until then, keeps the partial work, and reruns on the next best model
โข /team puts several models on one task; /parallel and /repeat run detached threads while you keep chatting
โข context is pruned + compacted and carried across the swap, and each repo keeps a small memory brain (with a touch of emotional computing), so the next model picks up the project's state instead of a cold prompt
My take after building it: the board is the easy half. The hard half is state: who did what, what's still true, what survives a model swap.
