@TonyNatif @PublicSquareEA @PublicSquareEA Bold move! While we're upcountry feasting on matooke and fresh air, let's hit the village with hard facts let’s borrow that monitor, we show them the invisible killer in cooking smoke or dust, and spark real change. Walking, talking and reimagining our fight for clean air.
Yesterday, our team at Public Square came together for a refreshing group walk. It wasn't just about the distance, it was a chance to catch up on the incredible progress of our #KampalaBreathes campaign and chart our course for the future.
As we moved along our route from Kisementi to Mulago and Kyebando, meeting various commuters, school children inclusive, The readings revealed that three-quarters of our walk took place with moderate air quality. However, about a quarter of the route was deemed unhealthy or very unhealthy for sensitive groups (like children) and even for healthy adults. This data brings home the reality that the threat of poor air quality is a constant challenge, even in the course of a single journey through our city.
It was a powerful reminder of the commitment of citizen scientists and everyone working tirelessly to raise awareness about air quality.
The energy was high as we discussed our next steps from expanding our data collection efforts to amplifying our advocacy for policy changes.
In agreement that this journey is a marathon, not a sprint, and we're grateful for every step we take together.
Let's discuss in the comments, What do you think the next major move should be in the fight for cleaner air?

Ssebo, at @PublicSquareEA, we’ve been banging on about the need to address our #AirQuality problem.
Indeed you’re right; it’s a very important issue.
We have @nemaug and @ABarirega leading the efforts. @KCCAUG as well.
Conversations are being had and solutions are being implemented.
Ask @Akeda4, @asiimwe4justice etc. They’re shining a light on this very important issue.
Please don’t take @KKariisa’s advice to move to Ruhaama.
We can clean our city and continue enjoying it.

I love the direction of the campaign.
Proud of you team.

We met with the Executive Director of @nemaug, Dr @ABarirega, to discuss ways we can harness the power collaboration between academia, civil society, regulators, policy makers and the citizens to drive conversations and work on efforts aimed at ensuring the country has cleaner air.
Dr Barirega Akankwasa highlighted the important steps @nemaug and @KCCAUG have taken to address the challenge of air quality in the country, especially the capital city, Kampala.
He also indicated that NEMA, together with organizations like @AirQoProject, are leading efforts to increase the number of air quality sensors all over the country. He informed us that sensors have already been installed in Mbarara and the national rollout is on.
He said NEMA intends to have a central database for air quality monitoring to allow for ease of access to information for researchers, ordinary citizens and policy makers.
He lauded Uganda’s efforts and commitment towards improving air quality and offered NEMA’s support and partnership in measures aimed at better understanding the problem through research and working towards finding lasting solutions.
We thank him and his team for the great hospitality and applaud the excellent work they’re doing to improve the environment, both for now and for posterity.

If Uganda’s environmental regulation had lungs, they’d be in ICU. Choked by bureaucracy, drowned in diesel, and gaslit by policy drafts that never breathe. We need to do better it's not too late!

WHEN THE MEDIA BREATHES LIFE INTO THE AIR POLLUTION FIGHT
Today, Public Square made the front page of Nation Media Group ,@DailyMonitor, one of Uganda’s most trusted voices with a truth we’ve long championed: Kampala is choking, and the air we ignore is silently killing us.
This isn’t just a headline. It’s a turning point!
For years, air pollution was reduced to abstract numbers. But now, we are ensuring that the data becomes a national conversation. The Daily Monitor’s stark revelation that millions breathe air 20x dirtier than WHO’s safe limit isn’t just a statistic. It’s a call to collective action.
Why This Matters
1. Media as megaphones: When major platforms like The Monitor amplify the crisis, it shifts from activist circles to dinner-table dialogue.
2. Data as power: Now, a mama in Bwaise can point to the paper and say, "See? This is why my little boy coughs every night during the holidays."
3. Solutions as duty: With public awareness comes public demand for cleaner transport, stricter regulations, and grassroots innovations.
This feature is proof that Change begins when truth is undeniable! But the real work starts now.

That’s beautiful! Did it rain today?
That does help with the dust and all…

@TonyNatif @PublicSquareEA The air quality in Mbale is reported to be good today. I certainly hope it remains this way, especially considering the proximity of the Mbale Industrial Park to the town center.

Uganda has too many problems for the air around to be trying to kill us. My colleagues at @PublicSquareEA will break down these stats further, however the situation is dire, its appalling and has reached its ceiling. We need to address this as soon as yesterday. Lest we perish!

This is why #CitizenScienceUG approach matters most. When the mama selling roasted maize finally connects her chest pain to the PM2.5 levels, her child’s cough spikes to pollution, that’s when real change begins. No jargon, no reports. Just clear truth, 1/2

THE AIR WE CANNOT SEE BUT OUR LUNGS CAN FEEL
So on one of our recent #KampalaBreathes campaign episodes, we had colleagues , @juliantabaro and others walk through the bustling markets of Kampala, Kalerwe Market for starters, not just to measure the air, but to help the market mamas truly understand what the numbers on the AQI mean for their lives.
What we found was heartbreaking.
Mama Lukia, who has cooked food for over 8 years, stared at the monitor results as it spiked to 387 µg/m³, "So this is why my chest burns every night?"
A young boda rider laughed when we told him his idle engine was pumping out fumes equivalent to 4 cigarettes an hour until we showed him a toddler playing right beside the exhaust.
A grandmother wiping soot off the plate before serving one of her daily customers, whispered, "We’ve always known the air was bad, but we didn’t know it was killing us softly."
This is the invisible emergency unfolding in our markets every day;
Children breathing air at least 6x above safe limits
Market mamas developing COPD by age 40
Food absorbing heavy metals from trash fires
But here’s the light in the smoke;
When we showed Mama Lukia how a simple clay stove could cut her exposure by a very large percentage, her eyes lit up "You mean I can still cook without choking?"
Change starts when we see the invisible.
The truth is, no one should have to choose between feeding their family and poisoning their lungs.
What’s the most urgent fix needed?
1. Cleaner cooking tech
2. Traffic pollution controls
3. Public air quality monitoring
4. Community education

Thank you, Natif.
I will get in touch with team, and see how we can align.
I could actually be more useful in Munyonyo and the surrounding areas.
The @PublicSquareEA air quality team has not yet done any air quality runs along Mawanda Road.
Do you wanna lead that #CitizenScienceUG initiative along Mawanda road and its neighboring areas?
The @PublicSquareEA team can come support you.
The plan is to empower each neighborhood to take charge of its air quality initiatives.
If we build from the ground up, we might somehow fix this problem.
Everyone can step up and be their neighborhood’s #AirQualityChampion

Has @PublicSquareEA collected the data from Mawanda road yet?
Because i can't even describe the stench that hit me that yesterday?
Someone should enter this video into an environmental science competition. This is #CitizenScienceUG at its absolute finest.
We need to fix the quality of air we breathe
#KampalaBreathes
As we join @Akeda4 for the boda boda road safety walk tomorrow, @PublicSquareEA together with the entire #KampalaBreathes crew decided to send a team of #CitizenScienceUG volunteers on boda boda rides around several parts of Kampala, from upscale to downtown Kampala.
The question was simple: how much poor quality air spots do these engines of the city hit?
The answer: boda boda riders have lungs of a coal mine. It’s not a sustainable way to live.
Let’s advocate for cleaner air. Our health depends on it.

@TonyNatif Insane. that's why the clean air campaign should be everyone's responsibility and Kudos to @PublicSquareEA for spearheading the campaign.
