WHEN THE MEDIA BREATHES LIFE INTO THE AIR POLLUTION FIGHT
Today, Public Square made the front page of Nation Media Group ,@DailyMonitor, one of Uganda’s most trusted voices with a truth we’ve long championed: Kampala is choking, and the air we ignore is silently killing us.
This isn’t just a headline. It’s a turning point!
For years, air pollution was reduced to abstract numbers. But now, we are ensuring that the data becomes a national conversation. The Daily Monitor’s stark revelation that millions breathe air 20x dirtier than WHO’s safe limit isn’t just a statistic. It’s a call to collective action.
Why This Matters
1. Media as megaphones: When major platforms like The Monitor amplify the crisis, it shifts from activist circles to dinner-table dialogue.
2. Data as power: Now, a mama in Bwaise can point to the paper and say, "See? This is why my little boy coughs every night during the holidays."
3. Solutions as duty: With public awareness comes public demand for cleaner transport, stricter regulations, and grassroots innovations.
This feature is proof that Change begins when truth is undeniable! But the real work starts now.

Uganda has too many problems for the air around to be trying to kill us. My colleagues at @PublicSquareEA will break down these stats further, however the situation is dire, its appalling and has reached its ceiling. We need to address this as soon as yesterday. Lest we perish!

The brain is our most vital organ. Protecting it starts with treating air quality like the public health crisis it is.

FOUR HOURS! is all takes for the air you breath to harm your mind.
This is not a distant threat to our health it's an immediate crisis unfolding with every breath. Groundbreaking new research, published as recently as February this year, delivers a chilling truth, inhaling polluted air can impair our cognitive abilities, including attention and emotional recognition, within a mere four hours of exposure!
Here in Kampala, this finding resonates with alarming urgency, as you have observed from results posted from previous campaigns on our various social media platforms. This means the invisible particulate matter we breathe daily is not only impacting our respiratory and cardiovascular systems but is directly diminishing our capacity for focus, clear decision-making, and even our social interactions, all within a single morning or afternoon.
This acute cognitive harm builds upon the established long-term risks, including increased susceptibility to neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. It's a profound threat to our daily productivity!
We cannot afford to wait. This silent assault on our brains and bodies demands immediate, decisive action.
Join us in this critical fight for clean air and a future where every breath empowers, rather than imperils, our cognitive health.

KAMPALA IS SMOKING WITHOUT LIGHTING UP
At The Public Square, we are committed to shedding light on critical issues affecting our communities. Recently, one of our colleagues @juliantabaro undertook a significant 60km run across Kampala from the bustling streets of Kololo to the vital routes like Bombo Road and the residential areas of Kawempe and Luwero all while equipped with an air monitor under the #KampalaBreathes campaign. The data we collected reveals a silent, yet deadly, crisis, our city's air quality!
The findings are stark and demand urgent attention. PM2.5 levels in areas like Kawempe frequently equate to smoking 8 cigarettes per day, while the dust on Bombo Road exposes residents and commuters to PM10 levels comparable to 4 cigarettes daily. This isn't just about statistics, it's about the very air we breathe and its profound impact on our health, especially for our children and vulnerable populations.
At The Public Square, we believe that understanding is the first step towards action. We urge everyone to review this crucial information and join us in advocating for cleaner air. Let's collectively demand a healthier environment for present and future generations.

This is important work that needs all our attention and effort.
“Whilst the air is clean in the green belt that’s protected, it’s terrible on the main roads of Ntinda, Kyambogo and Naalya”—-@qataharraymond on his #RunForCleanAirUG results.
Meanwhile, Kalerwe market 👇🏾 🙆🏾♂️

Last week, the @PublicSquareEA team asked me to run with an air quality monitor on my route for their #KampalaBreathes campaign.
The results are dire. Whilst the air is clean in the green belt that’s protected, it’s terrible on the main roads of Ntinda, Kyambogo and Naalya

Thanks for participating in the #KampalaBreathes campaign, @qataharraymond.
#KampalaAirQuality is indeed a very consequential issue worthy of our attention.

Surprisingly, the Air quality is much better on Sundays, early morning and at night. I remember a Saturday run we did and Oskars was running with a musk on because of the bad Air quality.
@juliantabaro we need to do a night run and you notice the difference!

@KawanguziShakur, let’s take Yinginiya on a night run. Maybe she’ll give us the answers we crave—like why the air tastes sweeter after dark. 🌙🏃🏽♂️✨
To be honest, this right here, is really impressive!
This wasn’t just a run, it was one other way of utilizing science and tech to prove one of the “cancers” coming fast ahead of us.
How I wish the authorities can put emphasis on urban greening.

Recently, I & @AbiazRwamwiri took a 60 km air quality run as part of the #KampalaBreathes campaign. With a mobile air sensor provided by @PublicSquareEA, we uncovered the invisible danger Kampala & Luwero residents face every day. Our air quality story👇. #RunForCleanAirUG

From the data analysis so far , breathing Kampala air is equivalent to smoking 120 cigarettes a month!!
With PM 2.5 and PM 10 at an exceedence of 3.6 and 4.4 respectively 👐👐

Air Quality is a problem.
We notice the differences running in forests or walking on mountain trails versus running in kampala during the traffic hours and busy areas.
@juliantabaro shares the actual numbers in her video as she runs Kampala to Luwero.
The air we breathe in Kampala isn’t as safe as it seems.
On our 21KM walk, some spots were 15–63x above WHO limits, a public health emergency. 🙏🏽
We must act.

This is beautiful Julian.
It's indeed eye opening, I wish I would establish the same around my Mityana and we compare notes.
Well done @juliantabaro @AbiazRwamwiri

The air we breathe in Kampala is a silent killer.
With pollution levels 10x the WHO safe limit, it's the 2nd leading risk factor for death in Africa, linked to 2,000 yearly deaths in our city.
This danger's been invisible til now
Today, we launch the #KampalaBreathes campaign.

On Saturday, I had the privilege to participate in a 21km #AirQuality walk around Northern Bypass (Naalya to Namboole section), Kireka, Kyambogo and Ntinda. Armed with a mobile air sensor, we uncovered the invisible danger Kampala residents face every day.
Here is the scientific summary of what our lungs experienced;
• Average PM2.5: ~75 µg/m³ (Calculated average of the entire 21KM AQ session)
• Headline: An Unhealthy Journey
• Explanation: The average exposure during the entire 21km walk was categorized as 'Unhealthy' and 15 times above the WHO recommended annual limit.
We recorded the worst air quality in Kireka, followed by Northern Bypass, Kyambogo and Ntinda recorded the best.
It’s not too late; let’s opt for clean sources of cooking fuels, plant more trees, and please regularly service your vehicles to reduce dangerous emissions.
