The proposed new EU air quality directives are a step in the right direction, but there are still some areas where they could be improved. Here are the best and worst five things about the proposed directives:
**Best 5 things:**
1. The directives set more stringent air quality standards, which will help to protect public health.
2. The directives require member states to take more ambitious action to reduce air pollution, including from cars, trucks, and power plants.
3. The directives provide more funding for research and development into new technologies to reduce air pollution.
4. The directives strengthen the rights of citizens to access information about air quality and to take legal action against polluters.
5. The directives are aligned with the EU's Green Deal, which aims to make the EU climate-neutral by 2050.
**Worst 5 things:**
1. The directives do not go far enough in reducing air pollution from some sources, such as agriculture and shipping.
2. The directives do not provide enough funding to help member states implement the new standards.
3. The directives do not give citizens enough rights to hold polluters accountable.
4. The directives are not ambitious enough to meet the World Health Organization's air quality guidelines.
5. The directives are not binding, which means that member states are not required to implement them.
Overall, the proposed new EU air quality directives are a positive step, but there is still room for improvement. By strengthening the directives and making them more ambitious, the EU can help to protect public health and create a cleaner, healthier environment for all
