I'm happy to be participating in this important chat on LGBTQ bullying, arguably one of the most important, and often downplayed, issues facing LGTBQ students today. I teach in the Department of Communication at USF in Tampa. #commedchat
Thanks! This is hard work. I've appreciated how this chat examined some of the challenges, and opportunities, and the great (sometimes grave) need to help the most vulnerable among us. Day by day, interaction by interaction. Who needs our care right now? Peace

I cannot express how grateful I am for everyone’s thoughtful & engaged participation in this #wickedproblemsforum discussion! Many thanks to all of you and our guest, @berrykeith, and moderator, @profckylerudick! #CommEdChat
Overall, engaging with bullying in K-12, and in university contexts, entails working mindfully. Also not a panacea, mindfulness entails performing gently, compassionately, honestly, vulnerably, and even humorously, for greater inclusion, and justice. Peace...

@profckylerudick @commedjournal (4) Confront bullying, and all modes of aggression, especially microaggressions (see the work of Nadal), in ways that will create an impact and that embody advocacy for vulnerable standpoints. Be consistent.

.@berrykeith -- I'd love to see some syllabus examples, if you know anyone willing/able to share :) #CommEdChat
@profckylerudick @commedjournal (3) Professors model inclusion and support. Study it, learn it, risk within it, and be it. Period. And don't bully people who speak in insensitive ways. Handle it, sharply even, and don't sugar coat. But don't bully...and finally.

@profckylerudick @commedjournal (2) Unapologetically and unequivocally create the conditions for one's classroom to be a space that--across as many classes as possible--entails learning about difference in inclusive and equitable ways. Embed learning in curricula.

@profckylerudick @commedjournal (1) Build strong supportive climate statements and policies within the syllabus. Make them specific, direct, and unequivocal; yet at the same time, and they shouldn't inadvertently commit violence against any students...

Who are some queer authors of color? Benny Wang-Lamaster (an author in this Comm Ed forum), Bernadette Marie Calafell, Bryant Alexander, Robert Guttierez, Amber Johnson, and many more. These amazing folks write and perform ground breaking work.

@profckylerudick (5) From Living Sexualities, still lingering is Tony's story of homophobia from growing up, being a student and family member in a small town, and Cathy's stories of AND her efforts to reconcile faith as an out lesbian who is also devoutly Catholic.

@profckylerudick (4) We convey and examine numerous stories, some based in interviews, that speak to the perils and promise of being LGBTQ youth, and in some stories, K-12 stories. This trying experience of writing these stories really also was eye/heart opening. :)

@profckylerudick (2) the stories told in the data in my Comm Ed piece are lasting memories, especially from the recent GLSEN study. Queers of color being forgotten by normative anti-bullying prevention work. Trans folk being denied their bathrooms. And more....

@profckylerudick I've worked with others' stories, largely with queer youth. These are stories that shine a light on what it means to be fabulous, out (often), and an "authentic", all the while, and concomitantly, feeling like one's wellness and life are at risk.

(3) But I worry about the emotional stories that are told and what that does for our understanding. Students are often (not always) more than just victims. The chapter considers resilience in the face of the cruelty.
