If those who condone and celebrate political violence suffer serious consequences, it becomes more likely that fewer people will verbalize such views. It’s called social deterrent. Eventually, the decrease of verbal approval for such views should result in fewer people embracing this dangerous ideology. And ultimately, we hope as a society that fewer would act upon it. This is my WHOLE point I am making. When people actually articulate an imminent threat of violence against someone-that can and should be criminally punished. I know many who have died following such threats. Cheering or applauding political violence cannot be constitutionally used as a basis for criminal prosecution. But such cheering can most certainly be used to justify losing your respectability, friends, and job. There is a massive difference between being arrested and criminally prosecuted and facing counseling, disciplinary action or termination at your State or Federal job When bad actors get a free pass from our highest ranking leaders for applauding violence, we will most certainly get more violence.
