I know this is hard for many to understand but an oil price shock to the upside is ultimately deflationary at this point of the credit cycle.
Oil peaked in June of 2008 after a very fast rise and headline inflation was accelerating until it wasn’t.
If oil stays above $80 for any length of time it will be a death blow for an already struggling consumer.
It’s always about the speed of the price change.

Amazon's mass layoffs are expected to have a "ripple effect on tax revenues and local spending" in Puget Sound, as at least 2300 high wage jobs no longer exist.
Lost in the noise; Facebook also laid off another 100 highly paid engineers in Seattle.
This does not bode well for the plethora of already struggling businesses and restaurants that depend on those workers spending money.

Shocking stat of the day:
Currently, ~82% of the US population lives in regions experiencing an economic recession, the highest share since 2020.
The analysis uses the Fed Beige Book, a report published 8 times a year based on anecdotal information gathered from businesses, economists, and market contacts from the 12 Fed districts.
The percentage has DOUBLED since the start of 2025.
Over the last 20 years, only 2008 and 2020 saw such a large share of the country in recession.
Meanwhile, the latest Atlanta Fed estimate for real US GDP growth in Q3 2025 is +3.9%.

For the stagflation counterpoint to my #DeflationCometh thesis, this is well-written:
Just so we are clear. The USD $DXY is nearing levels that could break technically and see levels not seen since 2022.
We are suffering a loss of confidence in the USA. It's very well known how overleveraged the stock markets have been. But the loss in confidence comes in form of selling bonds and the US Dollar, in a time when the market tends to buy dollars when yields rise, that simply not the case. I have been discussing this issue for years with the @forexanalytix folks, and also back when I was the head strategist at the WT group and Ally as well.
This is a serious situation we should not take lightly. Any asset/portfolio manager is trying to move away from US assets. It's frankly "unnerving" having too much exposure when all that has to happen is a wave of the pen of one person, can swing your portfolio too greatly in one direction or another. As a risk manager, how to you price that? Simple answer: you can't.
We are seeing the repercussions of that in real time the last week. My fear, it's in the early innings unfortunately.

Abrupt deceleration is core CPI after March is highly unusual. It's even more noteworthy given the context of rising unemployment and more visible widespread weakness all around the rest of the economy.
