📌 This week, we hosted an #FoEDebate on Europe’s #AgeingCrisis, and the practical steps we can take to face this reality.
🗣️ @GilesMerritt, Founder of Friends of Europe, set the tone by describing the demographic shift, not as a distant concern, but as an imminent crisis – one that EU policymakers have long failed to adequately address, noting that “the European Commission has shown scant interest in demographic challenges”.
💬 Meanwhile, @Birgit_Van_Hout, Chief of the @UNFPABrussels, stressed that ageing is in fact a success story in terms of welfare and advancement in healthcare – and that Europe’s true problem lies in policy inertia: “Dependency depends as much on health and income as it depends on age”.
The impacts of #DemographicChange are already being felt – and short-term political cycles must not continue to delay meaningful reform. The #EU and its member states must step up, communicate better and engage citizens in shaping sustainable, inclusive and future-proof policies.
