@SEND_CA @SEND_Action @SpcialNdsJungle @SendCrisis Lack of support without diagnosis eg #autistic, #ADHD; requiring absence confirmation from unattainable bodies eg #CAMHS. Deniability from all services - Health, LA, Social Care. Parent Blame. Overfocus on compliant control in schools. #FailFirstThenFix policies. Underfunded
@StarlightMcKenz @Ofstednews @amanda_spielman Brilliant amazing wonderful autistic kid now at incredible independent specialist & starting to find their ‘self again. They will be fine. But experience of two at the same school was poles apart & this is what needs to be challenged by those who scrutinise. #FailFirstThenFix
@FurryCanary We absolutely agree with you - we should be spotting healthy happy young #autistic children so that they can thrive through education with all adaptations and adjustments made proactively, acknowledging their differences. Reactive is #FailFirstThenFix but without resources
Definitely no to broken kids. No to #FailFirstThenFix. No to #ParentBlaming. And a heck-yes to a proper understanding of #neurodiversity & reimplementation of a child centred education system.
My girl broke in year 5, it’s awful that the system will not listen to us or our children.
Central government must radically overhaul and properly fund the education, health and social care system so that each local authority can provide a robust service early. No to broken kids
@WalkingHead65 We’re horrified by the #FailFirstThenFix scenarios which are playing out across UK education at the moment. There is NO SAFETY NET for children experience devastating MH problems. And even if difficulties are acknowledged, #CAMHS are in crisis and the wait for help can be months
Countless members reporting this. School phobia is real. cPTSD is real. MH services slashed to the core. Advice is to force YP back to the very location that triggers them. Kindness & awareness are key, yet so many, including #AutisticGirls put in harms way #FailFirstThenFix
We need to move away from #FailFirstThenFix .... and we can all do this together. There’s loads of brilliant information out there - we’ll be tagging/retweeting & sharing the best bits. Let’s try to make these transitions safe [end for now]
Something very similar in both education & CAMHS services in UK. #SEN children being required by LAs to ‘fail’ in multiple settings before appropriate education perhaps sought. Unadapted MH therapies for co-concurrent conditions given to #AutisticGirls #FailFirstThenFix
Awaiting assessment for autism, girl w/ sensory processing difficulties & bullied, left without education for 9 months. LA consider it an ‘extremely challenging case’, yet our members report this time and time again.
#AutisticGirlsFailed #FailFirstThenFix #SchoolForSome
Councils have a legal duty to provide suitable alternative provision for children and young people who are missing education for whatever reason.

An ACE for an #autistic child could be school itself; undiagnosed & unsupported CYP being forced in to coercive zero tolerance settings may be the root of childhood traumas.
We need all adults, including those in LAs making EHCP decisions, to acknowledge this #FailFirstThenFix
Children affected by adverse childhood experience (ACE). ‘Wider school policies should be reviewed too. Research suggests that zero tolerance and punitive behaviour policies, for example, are ineffective for children who have had difficult childhoods‘ https://t.co/0MV1rdxa69
This was our experience. We had a perfect and healthy #autistic child. Transition to secondary bought about cliff-edge MH decline. Autism finally diagnosed, but now lacking holistic #ASC appropriate MH support to help them recover. This is what needs to change. #FailFirstThenFix
@networkautism @LanaGrantAutism Our members experience is autism is rarely diagnosed in healthy young #AutisticGirls and is only often mentioned after a raft of Co-concurrent MH conditions have bought that youngster to the attention of #CAMHS. This is what must change - we need recognition & early DX.
@tinkerbellbites @draevans @EastSussexCC @SEND_Action @gfreeman2012 @ChildrensComm @nettletron66 I can’t like that, but it’s happening all over the UK. A STRATEGY that is based upon #FailFirstThenFix - but due to cuts, the Fix part isn’t necessarily applicable. #FailFirstThenFluoxetine in our case @FIGSUK
A script that shouldn’t be followed but is all too common. We need an effective #NationalStrategy that is resourced and monitored to prevent an inevitable deterioration in CYP mental Health. #FailFirstThenFix #GirlsCanBeAutisticToo #Anxiety #SchoolRefusal
@gdmorewood @FIGSUK have a mission to challenge this. Hopefully we see starting to gain traction in campaigning but we have to move away from #FailFirstThenFix - these are traumatic Adverse Childhood Experiences being wrought on your people @ChildrensComm
@PeterStefanovi2 Our members in @FIGSUK have horror stories of the cuts impacting upon the recognition, support, diagnosis & continued education of #AutisticGirls in UK schools. 3.5k members in 14 months and growing. All devastated by this assault on the most vulnerable kids. #FailFirstThenFix
My kid’s now at awesome Indi Specialist that’s making them happy, & finally building trust in edu profs. Forever greatful to Mainstream Sec #2 who tried so hard to see if it could work. But the #SEND system absolutely sucks. 2 traumatic years before. #FailFirstThenFix @FIGSUK
@FIGSUK sadly know all about #KidsInCrisis. Harrowing member accounts match the equally harrowing @Panorama episode this evening concerning #camhs at breaking point and children #Autistic or otherwise left to #failfirstthenfix it's inhumane.
@MattHancock @DHSCgovuk
@halfon4harlowMP @FIGSUK extraordinary amount of evidence throughout the country. My own #autistic daughter has missed 2 years of KS3, & attempted 4 types of secondary education. About to go for 5th attempt at independent specialist. #failfirstthenfix #SENDcrisis #fingerscrossed https://t.co/dG57KgQKq5
Exclusions or medical sign offs / unable to attend. So many ways our #Send #Autistic children are fallimg through the educational gaps. #lostpotential #writtenoff #discriminatedagainst
The system remains broken & our children remain set up 2 fail. #BreakFirstFixLater https://t.co/JViz69Z5xT
Great words, but platitudes in reality. #failfirstthenfix is the M.O. of LAs. Servant/Master (or Mistress?) but the 'Offspring' is the one who suffers. Each. And. Every. Time. @FIGSUK where are the Lords and their enforcers when our kids are in the crossfire? https://t.co/qyGmSHRs1F
@theresa_may, your government has systematically kettled the youngest and most vulnerable youngsters in to mental health crisis via #Austerity in school and #nhs budgets. Your own cross party committees damned your proposals re school MH #failfirstthenfix just isn't fair @FIGSUK https://t.co/3HfdapVjRF
During #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek, let’s all commit to end the stigma, and to support each other to lead happy and healthy lives.
