@Albert_CelineC But fishing is their livelyhood, so at the same time they are afraid that mitigation initiatives will restrict their livelihood. Both dialogue and listening is really important! #WSTC8 #FishSesh

Though accounting for 1/4 of total estimated mortality, current levels of bycatch do not appear to have substantially reduced the positive population trajectory of c. guillemots at Hornøya. #WSTC8 #FishSesh 10/14

Annual bycatch mortality rates on Hornøya varied little over time and were similar to background mortality (except year 2014-2017). Bycatch mortality was responsible for 27% of total estimated mortality. #WSTC8 #FishSesh 9/14

@SEAPOP4 data from Hornøya made available by @Tonereiert and colleagues, are used to show the preliminary results of the study. The common guillemot population at Hornøya has increased from barely over a thousand in the 1980s to over 15,000 in recent years #WSTC8 #FishSesh 8/14

The bycatch is unevenly distributed along the Norwegian coast, with highest predicted bycatch of c. guillemot in NE Norway during the winter months. So what does this bycatch mean for pop. viability? This depends on the status of affected populations! #WSTC8 #FishSesh 5/14

Studies show that 4000 - 8000 seabirds drown in costal gillnets in Norwegian waters annually, with common #guillemot, Uria aalge, accounting for 1/3 of these (https://t.co/1ERFPVKqBP). The birds get entangled in the net while searching for food. #WSTC8 #FishSesh 4/14
