1) Expose Otsuka kickbacks & free product
Otsuka (with Lundbeck) runs patient assistance programs offering up to $3,000/year co-pay coverage for Abilify Maintena + free starter doses via certificates (no cards needed). In US, Otsuka paid millions in settlements for off-label promotion & kickbacks. In Canada? Class actions settled over failure to warn on compulsions. These incentives lower barriers—then coercion locks patients in for revenue. Demand transparency: FOI on PharmaCare uptake & prescriber incentives in BC. @Pharmed_Out
2) Forced injections with ZERO consent
Under BC Mental Health Act extended leave (~6,000 people), patients are “deemed” consenting. Refuse/miss depot shots? Police warrant + forced administration. Stories like Kirsten Anvik’s: years of Abilify Maintena despite severe side effects (agony, balance loss, emotional blunting). No right to stop/switch without risking police. This overrides autonomy & Charter rights. UN CRPD violations flagged. Fix: Explicit informed consent + exit ramps for severe adverse effects. @UNHumanRights
3) Make depot LAIs controlled substances
Aripiprazole LAIs (Maintena/Asimtufii) aren’t controlled federally or in BC—no special tracking, limits, or audits. They should be: mandate quantity caps, adverse event reporting, prescriber registration, witnessed protocols. These aren’t benign monthly “maintenance”—lifelong coercion demands oversight. Precedent for high-risk meds exists. Health Canada/BC Ministry: re-schedule or create special monitoring category. #PatientSafety
4) Stop NPs prescribing from Island Health “designated pharmacies”
BC NPs prescribe/administer LAIs freely. Island Health routes many extended leave depots through designated pharmacies—NPs diagnose, prescribe, inject. This fast-tracks coercion with less specialist oversight on side effects. High-volume, pharma-influenced pipelines. Restrict depot LAI prescribing/admin under extended leave to psychiatrists or require specialist co-signature. Audit @VanIslandHealth contracts for incentives. #NursePractitionerScope @BCnursemidwife
The machine: Pharma (Otsuka/Lundbeck) gets locked-in revenue via assistance/free product → systems enforce “adherence” via police → NPs expand access → zero real controls. Predictable tragedies: suicidality from akathisia, financial ruin from compulsions. Not care—control and public safety issues @NanaimoRCMP BC PharmaCare fully reimburses Abilify Asimtufii/Maintena for “non-adherent” schizophrenia patients. Millions spent annually while voluntary recovery under-resourced. Prioritize trauma-informed, peer-led supports over forced pharmacology.
Urgent reforms needed:
- Ban forced LAIs on reported severe akathisia/compulsions
- Mandatory independent reviews every month
- Transparent extended leave outcome tracking
