Any breach of the #humanrights Defender’s safeguarding “including unusual sudden changes in their environment that might cause harm” specifically after receiving threats” should be treated as #transnationalrepression and authorities should step in to investigate! #HRDs
The mental health of human rights defenders (HRDs) can worsen significantly due to transnational repression, which is when a state targets activists and dissidents beyond its own borders. Here’s how and why that happens:
How Transnational Repression Affects HRDs’ Mental Health:
1Constant Fear and Anxiety
HRDs face ongoing threats, surveillance, harassment, and even kidnapping or assassination attempts abroad. This creates chronic stress and fear for their safety and the safety of their loved ones.
2Isolation and Loneliness
Being targeted across borders often means HRDs are cut off from their own financial resources, support networks, communities, or family back home, leading to deep feelings of isolation and alienation.
3Psychological Trauma
Experiences of intimidation, harassment, stalking, or direct violence cause trauma. The fear that these acts could escalate to physical harm or disappearances can lead to PTSD.
4Smear campaigns
5Some governments spread false information directly or through foreign proxies to discredit HRDs internationally, which can cause stress, damage reputations, and deepen feelings of helplessness.
5Pressure and Uncertainty
HRDs under transnational repression may constantly worry about their legal status in host countries, the safety of their colleagues, and the unpredictability of the repression tactics. This chronic uncertainty can wear down resilience and mental well-being.
6Damage to Identity and Self-worth
Being vilified, defamed, or criminalized by their home governments undermines HRDs' sense of identity and purpose, affecting self-esteem and motivation.
7Digital surveillance and harassment
8HRDs are often targeted by spyware or hacking attempts, making them feel like they have no safe space — even their phones and computers become sources of extreme anxiety.
In the end:
Transnational repression creates an environment of persistent psychological threat that drains human rights defenders emotionally and mentally. The blend of fear, isolation, trauma, and uncertainty often results in anxiety disorders, depression, PTSD, and burnout.

A military trial over the attempted murder of our colleague Andrie Yunus of @KontraSupdates is increasingly biased & irregular, prompting concerns of institutional impunity
This is a crucial test for the rule of law, civilian supremacy & protection of #HRDs (1/5)
