I understand reasons to be conciliatory and build bridges, etc.
But the @BloombergDotOrg and @WHO complex has conspired to ban safer nicotine products in Vietnam, a high smoking country. On the one hand, there is bridge-building. On the other, there is normalising and nodding along to what amounts to a public health abuse of *other people* that will hurt or kill thousands and promote crime.
Of course, it is a common public or political reflex to wish to ban things deemed problematic. My beef here is with the moneyed professionals in the picture who really should know better and have no excuse for not knowing, yet have pushed policies that will do far more harm than good. In what other area of professional negligence would we try to see the other point of view or enter into an accommodating discourse?
Is it negligent or just different and not to my liking? We can tell it is negligent because we *never* see any weighing or even acknowledgement of trade-offs and unintended consequences (other than maybe to dismiss them as “industry interference” to avoid confronting them). If they had worked through nuanced policy considerations and come to a thoughtful but different policy view to my own, then that would be a basis for discussion and I would happily engage. But their approach is an exercise of power and expression of the power of money wrapped in a cloak of unexamined righteousness. They are not even *trying* to do the right thing, they are just trying to “win” their war - which means passing prohibition laws without really knowing why or to what effect.
Will they read the @MarcGunther piece and reflect. They should, but so far they have resisted and dismissed every effort at engagement or accountability and continued their work with unflinching missionary zeal.
This is despicable
