Why I’m sadly not at #ESA2023 in photos.
We collected 1,099 bags of biomass from over 700 20x50cm plots at our experiment last week. That bucket is just one of said quadrats. Also done: veg surveys at 156 1.5m x 1.5m plots, and 936 soil cores.

Polar kept me company for the early morning field work at our #nsffunded experiment @NIUlive today. While I wish she would’ve scribed for me, instead she deterred rabbits from eating the legumes. She’s the goodest of girls. #joneslabdoesfieldwork

Behold! Zapus hudsonius showing us why their common name is the meadow jumping mouse! Or, as I prefer to think of them, prairie kangaroos. Thanks for the science, little friend.
Trapped, tagged and handled with proper permits and IACUC.

@ErinGRowland
So. Much. Biomass! We’re sorting the plant growth in 0.5x0.2m quadrats by species in 95 plots and by grass, wildflower, or dead stuff in another 95 plots. Here are Lizzy, @samberk_12 and @ReginaMFrancia sorting and carrying biomass.
#JonesLabDoesFieldwork (and lab work).

@samberk_12 @ErinGRowland @ReginaMFrancia This small but mighty rockstar crew, most of who learned to ID plants this season, rocked it.
Now on to biomass collection, sorting, drying, and weighing.
#Vegapalooza #JonesLabDoesFieldwork

#Vegapalooza 2022 is in the books.
Vegapalooza - in which we identify all the plants in 190 0.5m x 0.5m long term plant research plots in the prairie.

The smammal data is plentiful and the blazing star is in bloom! Another successful summer season helping @ErinGRowland trap and process small mammals. #JonesLabDoesFieldwork

I am so ready in this photo to take my rage out on some soil cores! Map a la lab manager Lizzy, soil core, quadrat, Jennifer, and incredibly punny REU student all in tow :) #JonesLabDoesFieldwork
It was a nice, but hot, day sampling @Nachusa with @BarberEcology, @WSwingley and @DocHPJones. Ready for more soil sampling tomorrow!

Shout out to Olivia, who finished the last bit of her experiment as an undergrad today in HOT weather and will graduate with her Biology BSc Saturday!
This #NSFFunded #REU is helping us to understand how plants allocate N when they are grazed by bison.

Monthly progress photos I've taken of our #CAPER plots since July. It's been incredible to observe the growth and variation over the growing season, and I'm very happy with the effort I've put in to keep the plots healthy. #JonesLabDoesFieldwork

Our #CAPER plots have a lot of misfits since we planted them as plugs and they didn’t compete at the seedling stage like most restored prairies.

This 'big' bluestem hasn't quite lived up to its name yet! They typically grow 6-8ft tall, but this one is a bit of a misfit...

Stand back! I'm going to try science!
I really shouldn't be trusted with a pipette, but here we are.
This project is #NSFFunded #REU student Olivia's (not pictured...pictured is lab tech Sam). Trying to see if grazing impacts N uptake.

I’d be there if I didn’t have the dreaded summer cold. Severe fomo. Also nice addition to #FieldOfficePhoto

Yasss! #DronesForGood
We’re trying to see if we can understand how well prescribed fire took in our study plots with drone imagery.
#JonesLabDoesFieldwork
Why not a ton of dung? Well it’s still really rich in wildflowers and bison like grass. They use it but not as heavily as the grassier older restorations.
The close up is of our veg markers - we ID plants in 200 plots out here yearly during #vegapalooza
#joneslabdoesfieldwork
It’s Vegapalooza time in our lab! Plants in 90 1.5m x 1.5m plots identified today on the coolest day we’ve ever had in August. I needed a jacket! We have 110 more to go.

Get a load of this insect’s tongue!

A majestic morning @Nachusa. American pelicans and the herd w bison calves around the restored wetland.

1700 acres and these dudes rudely decided the site we were gridding was the best place to meander through on the way to more grazing today. #bisondelay
#joneslabdoesfieldwork, socially distanced edition.

Sticking your smammal bait to a piece of wax paper instead of the back of the trap is a game changer. Thanks for the great tip @gabbrobasalt! #joneslabdoesfieldwork
