. . .ተኵስ ኣቍም ተብለህ የለ እንዴ፧ . . . እንዳትተኵስ! ” (ኣታ ሰብኣይ ከይትትኩስ! ተዅሲ ደው ኣብል ኣይተበሃልካን ዲኻ፧) ዘርእዝጊ ኣጋውላ ናይቲ ወተሃደር ምስ ረኣየ፡ ሕቶ ዝተሓወሶ መጠንቀቕታ ሃቦ። ነቲ ቅድሚ ሳልስቲ ድሕሪ መንግስቱ ሃይለማርያም፡ ስልጣን ኣፍደገ መቓብር ዝተቐበለ ጀነራል ተስፋዬ ገብረኪዳን ዘመሓላለፎ መልእኽቲ’ዩ ብሃንደበት ዘኪሩዎ። እቲ ወተሃደር ነቲ ብሬድዮ ዝተቓልሐ፡ ሓድሽ ተተካኢ ፕረዚደንት ዘቕረቦ በይናዊ ተዅሲ ደው ናይ ምባል ውሳነ ሰሚዑዎ ክኸውን ይኽእል፡ ከይከውን ይኽእል። ዘርእዝጊ ሰሚዑዎ ክኸውን ተተስፈወ። ኣጋውላ ናይቲ ወተሃደር ዘይተፈተዎ ዘርእዝጊ፡ ናብ ታንኩ ምልስ ኢሉ ሃንድ ሰት ሬድዮኡ ኣልዒሉ “ተበገሱ!” በሎም፡ ነቶም ኣብ ተጠንቀቕ ድሕሪት ዝገደፎም ሰለስተ ታንክታት ዝዓጠቑ ብጾቱ። ብየማናይ ኢዱ ሽጕጡ ዓቲሩ ግልብጥ ክብል ከሎ፡ ብላዕሊ ሓደ ካልእ ወተሃደር ናብኡ ገጹ ክመጽእ ረኣዮ። “ሻለቃ!” ኢሉ ተዳህዮ እቲ ወተሃደር፡ እቲ ዘጋጠመ ምእንቲ ክነግሮ ክቐርቦ ስለ ዝደለየ። “ሻለቃ” እትብል ቃል ዝሰምዐ ዘርእዝጊ፡ እቲ ዝመጽኦ ዘሎ ወተሃደር ኣዛዚ ምዃኑ ተረድኦ። ምስቲ ሻለቃ’ውን ምዉቕ ሰላምታ ተለዋወጠ። ኢድ ንኢድ ተጨባበጡ። “ስንተኛ ሻለቃ ነህ፧” (ኣየናይ ሻለቃ ኢኻ፧) እቲ ሻለቃ ነታ ዘርእዝጊ ዘይፈትዋ ሕቶ ናይቲ ወተሃደር ደገማ። ዘርእዝጊ (ገኔ) ከም ዘይሰምዖ መሲሉ፡ ብጐኒ ናይታ ታንኪ ተንቀሳቐሰ። “ሞተር ኣጥፉ እንድንግባባ!” (ክንረዳዳእ ሞተረ ኣጥፍኡ!) በለ፡ እቲ ሻለቃ ብሓውሲ ትእዛዝ፡ ናቶም ታንክ ስለ ዝመሰለቶ። ሞተረ እንተጠፊኡ ነገር ተበላሽያ ማለት’ያ። ዘርእዝጊ፡ ከም ዘይትርአ ገይሩ ብየማነይቲ ኢዱ ንዝዓተራ ሽጕጡ ምስ ነብሱ ብምጽጋዕ፡ ኣጻብዕቱ ኣብ ቃታ ኣ እ ት ዩ ፡ ናብ ታንኩ ገጹ ተጠውየ። ብድሕሪ ብዓል ዘርእዝጊ ኣብ ኣፍደገ ናይቲ ቀጽሪ ዝጸንሐት ብዓል ገዛኢ ሰለሞን ዝነበሩዋ ታንኪ እናሓምሓመት ጠበቕ በለት። እቲ ዋርድያን እቲ ሻለቃን ተጠራጠሩ። “ሞተር ኣጥፋ ነው የምልህ!” (ሞተረ ኣጥፍእ እየ ዝብለካ ዘለኹ!) እንታይ ከም ዝተሓስበሉ ዘይፈለጠ ሻለቃ ክንድር ጀመረ። ግልብጥ ኢሉ ድማ ናብታ ብዓል ገዛኢ ዝነበሩዋ ታንኪ ከደ። “እቲ ሓደ ኣብዩና እዩ። ንስኻ ከኣ ካብዛ ታንኪ ከይትወርድ እነግረካ ኣለኹ!” በሎ ነገራቱ ጋን ዝኾኖ ሻለቃ። ንገዛኢ ብትግርኛ ክዛረብ ስለዝሰምዖ ኣመና ሰንቢዱ እዩ። ምስቲ ዋርድያን ኣብ ከባቢኡ ዝነበሩ ወተሃደራትን፡ ብሰንኪ ድምጺ ሞተረ ታንክታት፡ ፍረ ነገሩ ናይቶም ታንከኛታት ተጋደልቲ ዘይሰምዑዎ ተዘራረቡ። ገለ ካብቶም ድምጺ ሞተረ ታንክታትን ዝርርብ ሰባትን ዝሰምዑ፡ ደቂሶም ዝነበሩ ወተሃደራት፡ ብድድ ብድድ ክብሉ ጀመሩ። ፍሉይ ወተሃደራዊ ልብሲ ዝተኸድኑ ምንባሮምን ግዝፎምን ዝረኣዮም ዘርእዝጊ፡ ካብቶም ብፍሉይ ክንክን ዝተሓዙ ሓለዋ ናይ ቤተ- መንግስቲ ኣራት ኪሎ ምዃኖም ገመተ። ድሮ 30 ዝኾኑ እግረኛ ወተሃደራት ተንሲኦም ናብኣቶም ገጾም ወረር ወረር ክብሉ ጀመሩ። “ሓምሳ ታንክታት ዓጢቖም ንኽዋግኡ ዝተዳለዉ ወተሃደራት ብሰላም ዕጥቆም ፈቲሖም ክማረኹ ይኽእሉ እዮም” ዝብል ሓሳብ ዘይነበሮም ታንከኛታት ህዝባዊ ግንባር ኣይተዳህለሉን። ኣእዳዎም ኣብ ቃታ ኣቐሚጦም፡ ሞተረ ታንክታቶም እና’ርሰኑ ክጠሓሓኑ ተዳለዉ። ልክዕ ኣብታ እዋን’ቲኣ ካብ ማእከል ከተማ፡ ካብ ቀረባ ርሕቀት ናይ ረሻሽ ተዅሲ ተሰምዐ። ውሑዳት ጠያይት እየን። ኩሎም ኣብ እግሪ ታንክታቶምን ኣብ ኩሉ ሸነኻት ቀጽሪ ቤተ-መንግስቲ ኣራት ኪሎን ደቂሶም ዝነበሩ ወተሃደራት፡ ብድምጺ ተዅሲ ረሻሽ ተበራቢሮም ተንስኡ። ብኡ ንብኡ፡ ሓንቲ ታንኪ ብውሽጢ ቤተ-መንግስቲ ብናህሪ ተቐልቀለት። ዘርእዝጊ ዘሊሉ ናብ ታንኩ ኣትዩ ትሮት ዓጸወ። ንመድፍዓጂ ዑመር “በላ!” በሎ ብዓውታ። ምኵር ተኳሳይ ዑመር፡ ነታ 10 ሜትሮ ኣቢላ ቀሪባቶም ዝነበረት ታንኪ ጸላኢ ንምህራም፡ ርሕቀት ምዕቃን ዘድልዮ ኣይነበረን። ኣነጻጺሩ ቦምባኡ ፈነወ። እታ ታንኪ “ሃል!” በለት። ብርቱዕ ባርዕን ድምጺ ናይ ዝነተጒ ቦምባታትን ነቲ ከባቢ ኣናወጾ። ኩሎም ኣብቲ ከባቢ ዝነበሩ ወተሃደራት ብጅላዳት ናይቲ ቦምባ ተረፍተቱ። ኣውያት፡ ዕግርግር፡ ትኪ፡ ሃልሃልታ ... ኣራት ኪሎ ተናወጸት። ታንከኛታትና ካልኣይቲ ቦምባ ሰደዱ። ነቶም ወተሃደራት ለኪማ ኣብ መኽዘን ኣጽዋር ዓለበት። ቤተ-መንግስቲ ናብ እቶን ተቐየረ። እቲ ዝተባርዐ ቦምባታትን ጠያይትን ዘስምዖ ድምጽን ዘኸተሎ ባርዕን፡ ካብኡ ብዝነጥር ጅላዳት ዝቕዘፉ ወተሃደራት፡ ታንክታቶም ገዲፎም ዝሃድሙ፡ ኣብ ታንክታቶም ደዪቦም ዝዕቈቡ...ነውጺ ገደደ። ብውሽጢ ቤተ-መንግስቲ ሓንቲ T-62 ዝዓይነታ ካልኣይቲ ታንኪ ዝሓዙ ታንከኛታት ደርግ፡ ሻምብቆኦም ኣቕኒዖም ናብ ብዓል ዘርእዝጊ እናተሓምበቡ መጹ። ታንኪ ክትቅልቀልን መድፍዓጂ ዑመር፡ ዝረጐደ ድርዒ ታንኪ ናብ ጭቃ ዝቕይር፡ ናይ 3,000 ዲግሪ ሰንቲግረይድ ዋዒ ዘለዎ ኣንኳሊ ቦምባ ሰዲዱ ክግስማን ሓደ ኮነ። ኣብ ክልተ ተመቲራ መኸኸት። ኣብ ውሽጣ ዝነበሩ ወተሃደራት ከም ቋንጣ ሓረሩ። ቤተ መንግስቲ ናብ መጋርያ ተቐየረት። ታንከኛታት ሻዕብያ ሽዱሽተ ቦምባታት ምስ ተኰሱ፡ ድሮ ናይ ስዕረት መንፈስ ሓዲሩዎም ዝነበረ ታንከኛታትን ኣጋርን ወተሃደራት ደርግ ነገራቱ ጋን ኮይኑዎም ኣእዳዎም ሓፍ ከብሉ ጀመሩ። ድሕሪ’ዚ ኩነት’ዚ፡ ዘርእዝጊ ዝመርሖም ታንከኛታት ህዝባዊ ግንባር፡ ምስቲ ዘሰነዮም ኣሃዱታት ህወሓት ብሓባር፡ ንቤተ መንግስቲ ኣራት ኪሎ ብምሉኡ ተቘጻጸሩዎ። ንስርዓት ደርግን ሰራዊቱን ሓንሳብን ንሓዋሩን ካብ ቀጽሪ ቤተ መንግስቲ ኣራት ኪሎ ፈንቀሉዎም። ጅግና ብጻይ ዘርእዝጊ ዝመርሖም ምዑታት ታንከኛታት ብርጌድ 23 መካናይዝድ ክፍለሰራዊት 74። ሓንቲ ካብተን ዝገርማኒ ዕላላት ዘርእዝጊ (ገኔ)፡ ኣብቲ እዋን’ቲ ዝማረኹዋ ናይ ሓደ ወጻእተኛ ካሜራ እያ። ኣብ ውሽጢ ሓንቲ ካብተን ኣብ ውሽጢ ቤተ-መንግስቲ ኣዒመን ከለዋ ብድፍረት ገኔን ብጾቱን ኣሀሚሎም ዝማረኹወን ታንክታት ጸላኢ እያ ጸኒሓቶም። እቲ 50 ታንክታት ዝዓጠቐ መካናይዝድ ብርጌድ ደርግ፡ ብድሮ ናብ ውሽጢ ከተማ ኣዲስ ኣበባ ኣትዩ ንብረትን ገንዘብን ህዝቢ ክዘምት’ዩ ውዒሉ። ንብረት ህዝቢ እናዘረፉ እንከለዉ፡ ኣብታ ከተማ ካብ ዝነበሩ ወጻእተኛታት፡ ሓደ ኣመሪካዊ ጋዜጠኛ ብነዊሕ ዙም ክስእሎም ረኣዩዎ። ወተሃደራት ክመጽኡዎ ዝተዓዘበ ሰኣላይ ወጻእተኛ፡ ካሜራኡ ደርብዩሎም ሃደመ። ነታ ካሜራ ምስ ረኸቡ ኣይሰዓቡዎን። ብዓል ዘርእዝጊ ኣብ ቀጽሪ ኣራት ኪሎ ምስ ኣተዉ፣ ካሜራ ናይቲ ወጻእተኛ ኣብ ሓንቲ ካብተን ዝማረኹወን 50 ታንክታት ጸንሓቶም። እቶም ታንከኛታት ተጋደልቲ፡ ነቲ ካብታ ዝኣተዉላ ዕለት ኣትሒዙ ምስኦም ዝስእል ዝነበረ ናይ ቢቢሲ ጋዜጠኛ መሓመድ ኣሚን ናይ መን ምዃና ከለልያ ሓቲቶሞ። ናይቲ ኣመሪካዊ ጋዜጠኛ ምዃና ምስ ሓበሮም ክህቦ ኣረኪቦሞ። “ዝማረኽኩማ ንብረት ንስራሕኩም እንተ ተጠቐምኩምላ እንታይ ነይሩዎ፧” ቀዳመይቲ መዓልቲ ምስ ኣዕለለኒ ሓቲተዮ ነይረ ንዘርእዝጊ ዳዊት (ገናውኖ)። “እታ ዝዓበናላ ዘይናትካ ዘይምድላይ ባህሊ’ኸ፧” ዘርእዝጊ ነዛ ቃል’ዚኣ ኣብ ድሮ ዕለተ-መስዋእቱ ኣብ ዘካየድናዮ ቃለ-መጠይቕ ኢሉዋ። ንሕቶይ በቲ ረዚን ክብሪ ሕብረተሰብ ኤርትራ መሊሱለይ። እዚ ዘቕረብኩልኩም ዕላል ካብ ኣፍ ብዓል ውዕሎ ዝሰማዕኩዎ እዩ። ሓደ ኣዝዩ ንእሽቶ ክፋል ካብ ውዕሎታት ኣብ ስግረ-ዶባዊ ስርሒታት ዝተሳተፉ ጀጋኑ ተጋደልቲ ድማ እዩ። እቲ ዝሰፍሐ ታሪኽ ናይቲ ስግረ-ዶባዊ ወፍሪ ውድብ ህዝባዊ ግንባር ሓርነት ኤርትራ፡ መዋፍርቲ ዘርእዝጊ ዝነበሩ ብሰፊሑ ከዘንትውዎ ንትስፎ።

A History Lesson: The Eritrean Struggle and the Fall of Ethiopian Regimes. Through decades of successive wars and battles, Eritrean freedom fighters,primarily the Eritrean People's Liberation Front (EPLF), ultimately defeated the Ethiopian military, which was widely regarded as the largest and most powerful army in sub-Saharan Africa at the time. Despite its formidable strength, the Ethiopian armed forces, including their vaunted air force, proved unable to prevent the collapse of successive Ethiopian governments: Emperor Haile Selassie's imperial regime, the Derg military junta, and later the EPRDF-led government. During the imperial era and into the Derg period, the Ethiopian military—particularly the Imperial Ethiopian Air Force (IEAF) with 43 aircraft, later the Ethiopian Air Force—was one of Africa's most advanced. It fielded a range of squadrons for bombing, fighter-bomber, ground-attack, fighter, reconnaissance, and transport roles. At its peak in the relevant periods, Ethiopian forces boasted an arsenal that included: - Approximately 300 aircraft and helicopters of various types and roles, - 17 naval vessels and fast boats, - Around 1,700 tanks, - 2,975 armored personnel carriers, - 4,000 combat vehicles and trucks, - 41,740 light and heavy machine guns, - 1,172 cannons, - 3,915 mortars, - 14,738 anti-tank weapons, - 1,605 anti-aircraft guns, - 400 rocket launchers and missiles, - And 1,551,400 assault rifles. Yet, despite this overwhelming material superiority, Ethiopian air power could not halt the Eritrean liberation movement's advances or save the collapsing regimes it supported. One of the most striking demonstrations of EPLF ingenuity and daring came on May 21, 1984. In a meticulously planned and executed operation—later celebrated as the "Miracle of 18 Minutes"—16 highly trained EPLF special commando units infiltrated and assaulted the heavily guarded Ethiopian Air Force base at Asmara (Sembel Airport). In just 18 minutes, the commandos destroyed 33 military aircraft, including 16 MiG fighter jets, along with associated weapons and fuel depots. This audacious raid inflicted a severe blow to Ethiopian air capabilities and showcased the EPLF's tactical brilliance and determination. Tragically, one commando was martyred during the operation: Mebrahtu Ghebrehiwet (nom de guerre: Embaye), who heroically gave his life in the line of duty. The remaining 15 commandos successfully withdrew, marking the mission as a resounding success. This operation, among many others in the long Eritrean liberation struggle, underscored that no amount of superior weaponry or air dominance could ultimately suppress the will and strategic resolve of the Eritrean fighters. It contributed to the eventual victory and independence achieved in 1991. Following the interview and the photo session, the freedom fighters released them, having explained the reasons behind the long struggle for freedom. Kagnew Station was a United States Army installation located in Asmara, Eritrea, on the Horn of Africa. Established in 1943, it functioned as a U.S. Army radio station, taking over and refurbishing a pre-existing Italian naval radio facility after Italian forces in Asmara surrendered to the Allies in 1941. Kagnew Station operated until April 29, 1977, when the last Americans departed. It housed the United States Army’s 4th Detachment of the Second Signal Service Battalion. As a Cold War listening station, Kagnew Station was situated near the equator at an altitude of 7,300 feet (2,200 meters) above sea level. Kagnew Station became home to over 5,000 American citizens at its peak in the 1960s. The closure of the Ethiopian military’s Keren R&R Center, located in the city of Keren, occurred in 1971 due to fighting between the Ethiopian military and Eritrean resistance fighters. Shortly after, the Massawa R&R Center, situated on the Red Sea, was also closed. In 1972, budget cuts forced the U.S. Army to reassess the $12 million cost of maintaining soldiers at Kagnew Station, leading to their withdrawal in 1973, although Navy personnel remained. Throughout the 1970s, operations at Kagnew Station were increasingly affected by the conflict between Eritrean resistance forces and the Ethiopian government. By March 1971, 3,500 Americans were still present at Kagnew Station, including 1,900 personnel—1,700 of whom were military—and 1,600 dependents. However, by July 18, 1972, the number of U.S. personnel had dropped to 900. In March 1974, only 100 civilian technicians, their families, and eight to ten U.S. military personnel remained to operate the remaining communications facility. The United States invested $77 million to build Kagnew Station, which would equate to approximately $495 million in 2006 dollars.
