Over 65 hours of observations, the #NIRCam on Webb gazed through the vast amounts of dust in the galaxy to image its distended disc structure and millions of stars. There are 16.5 million individual stars in this image! 🤯 2/3

Don’t miss #SpaceSparks 25 — Webb unveils young stars across every stage of formation
This #NIRCam image may show a small detail of the Orion Molecular Clouds (a region just 150 light-years across), but it contains stars at every stage of formation! 🌟

🛎️ It's quiz time! Webb recently examined the Cranium Nebula 💀 with this view captured by its #NIRCam instrument.

Astronomers used Webb’s #NIRCam to study a nearby object, 29 Cygni b, which weighs around 15 times more than Jupiter. This puts it right on the dividing line between what can be explained by these two formation processes. 2/3
Both images use data from Webb’s #NIRCam and #MIRI instruments, as well as from @Hubble_Space 🤝 while this image of Oph 163131 also includes observations from @almaobs

@loanhong123 Multiple phases of the central star’s death can be identified in this #NIRCam image. The white outer bubble is its initial ejection, mostly of hydrogen. The orange within is heavier material that followed that first outburst.
PMR 1 appears to have distinct regions that capture different phases of its evolution: an outer shell of gas (mostly hydrogen) that was blown off first, and an inner cloud (a mix of gases) with more structure.
Both the #NIRCam and #MIRI images show a dark lane running vertically through the middle of the nebula, giving it its brain-like appearance of left and right hemispheres. This lane could be related to an outburst or outflow from the central star.

🛎️ It's quiz time! Here is our latest look at the famous Helix Nebula 🧬 captured by the #NIRCam on board Webb.

By aligning various images of NGC 1637, the team found a single red supergiant in images taken by Webb’s #MIRI and #NIRCam in 2024. This marks the first published detection of a supernova progenitor by Webb!
The star is surprisingly red and surprisingly dusty 😶🌫️ so dusty that it was invisible to Hubble!

Its #MIRI collects the mid-infrared light emitted by the dust speckling NGC 5134’s interstellar clouds, while its #NIRCam records near-infrared light, mostly from the stars and star clusters dotting the galaxy’s spiral arms.
Together, these data paint a portrait of a galaxy in constant ebb and flow. The gas clouds are the sites of star formation, and each star that forms chips away at the galaxy’s supply of star-forming gas. When stars die, they recycle some of that gas back into the galaxy ♻️ 2/3
In the #NIRCam near-infrared image, most of the frame is filled with hundreds of background galaxies of all kinds. In the center-right there’s a zoom box that highlights one tiny, faint red dot—that’s GRB 250314A.
That dot is both the fading light from the supernova itself and (because everything is so blended at this distance) the light from the entire host galaxy it exploded in.
Seeing any sign of the host galaxy at all at z ≈ 7.3 is a breakthrough: these galaxies are extremely faint and small in our images, often just a few pixels that look like a reddish smudge.
#JWST’s sensitivity in the near-infrared let us detect it for the first time, giving us our earliest direct look at the kind of galaxy that was forming stars and hosting massive-star deaths when the #universe was only 5% of its present age.
