The 29th Meeting of the Prime Minister’s Science, Technology & Innovation Advisory Council (#PMSTIAC) was held on 10 March 2026. The meeting chaired by @AjaySoodIISc , Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India, discussed the National Mission on Advanced Manufacturing Systems in India.
In his opening address, Prof. Sood emphasised the need to indigenise, strengthen, and enhance the globally driven advanced manufacturing system in India. It is imperative to be globally competitive and driven in the face of changing geopolitical times. He highlighted the need to transition from being an importer to a designer, developer, and producer of such systems.
Presentations were made on various themes including ‘CNC Machine Tool Control Systems, Aggregates, Advanced/Special Purpose Machines, Testing and Metrology’, ‘Industrial Robotics and Automation,’ and ‘Advanced Manufacturing (3D & 4D printing)’ by experts.
In his concluding remarks, Prof. Sood observed that India already possesses significant technological capabilities across institutions, industry and strategic sectors, but these remain fragmented and insufficiently integrated. He stated the need to consolidate these strengths into a coherent national mission on Advanced Manufacturing Systems, to be led by Ministry of Heavy Industries and coordinated participation from relevant departments. As a way forward, he suggested that within the next three months, stakeholders may jointly prepare a practical action plan outlining the scope, priorities, institutional architecture and funding requirements of the proposed mission.
The meeting was joined by Dr Parvinder Maini, Scientific Secretary, OPSA; @SecretaryMEITY, @GoI_MeitY; @karandi65, Secretary, @IndiaDST; @DrNKalaiselvi, Director General, @CSIR_IND; Dr Ajay K. Mohanty, Secretary, @DAEIndia; Shri Samir V. Kamat, Chairman, @DRDO_India; Dr. V. Narayanan, Secretary, Department of Space; Shri Sanjay Garg, Director General, @IndianStandards; @shivkuma_k, CEO, @ANRFIndia; and @vijaymittal4, Joint Secretary, @MHI_GoI.
