The key moments from Paula Vennells at the Post Office inquiry‼️
Paula Vennells’ evidence included some of the most important moments of the Post Office inquiry so far.
The former chief executive, who worked for the company from 2007 to 2012, faced a multitude of questions delving deep into her role in the most widespread miscarriage of justice in British legal history!
1. A ‘craven, self-serving account’
She was accused of a “deliberate, considered, and calculated” cover-up!
Ed Henry KC (@edwardhenry1 ) said “you are responsible for your own downfall” and that she has given a “craven, self-serving account” in her evidence, that showed she was still living in a “cloud of denial and it persists even to today”.
2. Boos in the public gallery
There were boos in the public gallery as an email from Vennells was read, in which she accused Jo Hamilton (@JoHamil73963257 ) of “admitting false accounting on TV”.
Vennell's had sent an email to her then Head of Communications director Mark Davies (@markdavies67 ) in response to an episode of the One Show on @BBC
“The rest was hype and human interest,” she said. “Not easy for me to be objective but I was more bored than outraged. The MP quoted was full of bluster, and inaccurate. Jo Hamilton lacked passion and admitted false accounting on TV. And the bulletin was too long."
As Tim Moloney KC read out her email there was boos in the public gallery made up of former Postmasters and the public. Vennell's responded, "Of course what I would like to say is I’m very, very sorry, I regret everything I wrote.
Moloney said: "Do you just regret them because you’re here?"
3. Senior colleagues thrown under the bus
Vennells threw a series of colleagues under the bus, naming senior lawyers, including two legal counsels at the @PostOffice
She put five executives in the firing line — the IT chiefs Lesley Sewell and Mike Young, and general legal counsels Susan Crichton, Chris Aujard and Jane MacLeod.
Asked to explain why they did not share crucial information, she claimed on Wednesday that "individuals, myself included, made mistakes, didn’t see things, didn’t hear things."
On Friday she added: "I was surrounded by a board, the group executive committee. I cannot think that any of the major decisions I took by myself in isolation of anybody."
4. Proposal for major review ditched on PR advice
A major review of past Horizon convictions was dropped after the Post Office’s chief spin doctor @markdavies67 warned Paula Vennells not to make it front page news.
Mark Davies, communications director at the time, replied to her to say he believed a review would have a "ballistic impact and we will open this up very significantly, into front page news."
Vennell's replied : "You are right to call this out. And I will take your steer. No issue."
5. Senior lawyer dodges inquiry
The Post Office’s former top lawyer has refused to give evidence to the public inquiry and cannot be compelled because she lives abroad.

6. ‘Rogue witness kept secret’
Paula Vennells was put under extreme pressure over her knowledge of an IT expert witness, Gareth Jenkins, who was stood down for misleading “several” trials.
She admitted that she was briefed on the situation in summer 2013, but claimed she did not appreciate the legal ramifications.
“This is how you led Ms Vennells: you led through deception, manipulation and word-weaving the reality you wanted in place,” Ed Henry KC (@edwardhenry1 ) said. Vennell's was accused of hiding her team’s “dirty laundry”.
