We had been saying for sometime. This was the plan all along! Slowly kill BEST from within and then monetize BEST depots. The reason why buses were reduced, wet lease was encouraged, private bus operators were given preference is because the aim was always to unlock the BEST depots, prime property across Mumbai. We have already seen what happens when you give away BEST depot land in places like Mahim - the number of bus services are no longer as they used to be in the area, many bus routes have changed. They want to do this now across the city! This is just murder of BEST!
They are common #Mumbaikars living their daily lives. Yet going out of their way, doing their bit to save @myBESTBus. These people are identifying lost bus routes that have been rationalized which however is impacting thousands, daily. #SaveBEST

Respected Chief Minister @Dev_Fadnavis Saheb,
I am sharing pictures of two bus tickets of @myBESTBus Route No. 405 for the same day — one for my commute from Swapna Nagari at 18:32 hrs and the return journey at 20:59 hrs from Mulund Station to Swapna Nagari.
I can easily afford an auto fare of ₹46 one way and ₹92 return. I also own a private car.
Yet, I choose to travel by BEST bus because it is safer, dust-free, hassle-free, and far more comfortable.
I empathize with the commuting pains of the lower middle class. The majority of BEST bus commuters are maids, security guards, workers, municipal school children, senior citizens, and middle-class office goers — who are often unable to raise their voice against poor service, rising fares, or delays.
Route 405 acts like a ferry service, connecting the far end of Mulund to the railway station.
Recently, the ridership has dropped noticeably — not because of improved frequency, but due to increased fares.
After the fare hike to ₹12 minimum, many daily commuters have silently shifted to shared autos that cost ₹15 per seat and reach faster. No waiting of 20 minutes like the bus requires.
The BEST administration must closely examine ticket sales and actual ridership data before concluding on any route’s viability.
It appears there is a quiet, deliberate plan by BEST, BMC, and the State Government to cite financial losses and reduce services gradually — eventually making way for selling off prime bus depot lands to builders.
BEST is a public service, not a profit-making enterprise. This core principle seems to have been forgotten since the “electric supply” arm was separated from the Bombay Electric Supply and Transport Undertaking.
