The Great Nicobar project is a biological train wreck in slow motion.
I have been looking into the impact reports, and the numbers are devastating. We are talking about the potential extinction of at least 10 species, creatures that, in many cases, dont exist anywhere else on the planet.
This isnt just about "moving" animals. You cant just relocate a whole ecosystem and expect it to survive. Here is exactly what we are risking for the sake of a mega port:
The specialists we are about to lose:
1. The Nicobar Megapode: These birds build massive mounds to incubate their eggs. They are incredibly sensitive to habitat changes. Experts say moving them is basically impossible.
2. The Leatherback Turtle: Galathea Bay is one of their most critical nesting sites in the world. A massive port there is a death sentence for the next generation of these giants.
3. The Nicobar Treeshrew & Serpent Eagle: These arent just names on a list; they are endemic species. If they disappear from Great Nicobar, they are gone from the Earth. Period.
The "Adani Factor" and Government Favoritism: Beyond the ecology, the economics of this project raise massive red flags. While 11 companies showed interest, the government has been accused of paving a smooth path for the Adani Group.
1. Critics point out that environmental regulations were diluted specifically in zones where the port is planned.
2. The project was "fast tracked" with opaque clearances, bypassing traditional tribal consent from the Shompen and Nicobarese people.
3. When you see a ₹72,000 crore project moving this fast despite massive scientific pushback, you have to ask: Who is this really for? Is it for India’s "strategic growth," or is it a customized asset for a preferred corporate partner?
We are talking about putting a massive concrete footprint in a high-risk seismic zone (remember the 2004 Tsunami?) and erasing unique life forms. Infrastructure can be built differently, but we cant re-build a species once its extinct.
We need to keep talking about this before the first bulldozers arrive.
