🌳#SecondaryForests between 20 and 40 years old can remove carbon up to 8x faster per hectare than new natural growth — if they’re allowed to reach those older ages.
Global climate efforts often focus on protecting old-growth forests or planting new #trees (both essential), but there's a major blind spot: managing naturally regrowing forests — also known as secondary forests — for maximum #CarbonRemoval.
A new study from @nature_org, @WorldResources and partners — led in part by @landcarbonlab’s David Gibbs — introduces a machine learning–based model that reveals where and when secondary forests can deliver the greatest climate benefits.
The takeaway? Secondary forests may still be widely undervalued in climate mitigation planning. Protecting these forests — and allowing them to grow longer — plays a critical role in boosting near-term carbon removal.

Light levels in natural or planted #secondaryforests are very low, due to early branching of the #trees. By deliberate pruning and crown lifting of the trees light levels can be increased to promote #understorey growth. We were surprised to see how well this works. #biodiversity
