"Nothing Changes but Change Itself"; Manipur Needs to Reinvent Itself
Manipur State has always been dominated by the Meitei community as they represent the majority population with more than 50% of the State’s population, have 40 MLAs against 20 for “hill areas”, are an advanced community dominating all walks of life. In short, they control the government and all its machineries. They denied the HAC their say of deliberating over State Plan budget for “hill areas” as provided in the Presidential Order dated 20th June 1972 issued under Article 371-C by bypassing it and gave a much smaller share of development funds since 1972. Requisite numbers of posts of teachers, health workers and various other government functionaries created for “hill areas” were largely diverted and utilised in valley districts on various excuses neglecting the “hill areas”. On account of their political clout and financial power, individuals of dominant community secure all governmental contracts for various works in “hill areas” and placated the tribal contractors with petty sub-contracting works. As a result, governance and implementation of works and schemes in the “hill areas” have been suffering since 1972 and most assets exist only in paper or are of inferior quality.
Manipur is now at a stage where the dominant community has started suspecting that the balance of power may be shifting and slipping out of their hands. They blame it on illegal migrants which may partly be true, but not entirely correct. For more than five decades, the “hill areas” have been denied their fair share of developmental funds keeping it backward which resulted in rapid tribal population growth. The tribes were tricked into thinking that a large number of jobs have been created for “hill areas”, but were diverted and utlised in the valley leading to neglect of education and health care in the “hill areas”. Basic services like water supply and power supply exist only in records. Road connectivity is mainly fair weather road category. Under such situation, the hegemonic mindset of the dominant community has remained unchanged inviting trouble. The aggressive demands of Meitei community targeting tribal lands in “hill areas” has created the impression that they are still thinking of carrying on their hegemonic agenda of suppressing, oppressing, exploiting and subjugating the tribes. Such agenda has achieved nothing but sown the seeds in the minds of tribal people of breaking away from Manipur.

The savagery of #MeiteiTerrorists has once again come to the forefront, leaving a trail of blood and grief in its wake. In a heinous act of brutality, an Indian Army Pensioner, 𝐌𝐫. 𝐋𝐈𝐌𝐊𝐇𝐎𝐋𝐀𝐋 @𝐋𝐀𝐋𝐁𝐎𝐈 𝐌𝐀𝐓𝐄 from Motbung, Sadar Hills Kangpokpi District, belonging to the #Kuki Community, has been reportedly kidnapped and brutally killed by the #MeiteiTerrorists yesterday. The scene is deeply disturbing as ordinary #Meitei Men and Women gathering around the lifeless Body of Limkholal Kuki, rejoicing and making cruel remarks with heartless abandon. Their behavior is a shocking affront to human dignity, stripping away any semblance of humanity.
The gruesome spectacle of Meitei individuals reveling in the death of Limkholal Kuki is a chilling testament to the depths of hatred and intolerance that have consumed their hearts. Their callous remarks and celebratory demeanor as they gather around his lifeless body are a stark reminder of the dehumanizing impact of extremism. 𝐈𝐧 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐓𝐡𝐫𝐞𝐞 𝐃𝐚𝐲𝐬, 𝐒𝐄𝐕𝐄𝐍 𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬 have been brutally extinguished, leaving behind a trail of grief, trauma, and devastation.
The #Kuki community, already reeling from Years of persecution and marginalization, has been subjected to a relentless campaign of terror and intimidation by #MeiteiTerrorists. The killing of Mr. Limkholal is just the latest in a long series of atrocities committed against the #Kuki people, highlighting the urgent need for protection and justice. We condemn this heinous act of Terrorism in the strongest possible terms and demand that the Authorities take immediate action to bring the perpetrators to Justice.
But the lingering Question remains: Would the National Media have remained silent if the Victim was a #Meitei? Wouldn't the likes of @IndiaTodayNE, @NENowNews, @EastMojo, @WIONews, @ANI, @ndtvindia, @TimesNow, @republic, @aajtak, @ABPNews, @Channel4News, and @guardiannews have splashed the News across their Front Pages and Primetime Shows? The hypocrisy is staggering, and the bias is evident. The BJP's stranglehold on the Media is evident in the way even the most egregious #HumanRights abuses are swept under the carpet.
The World is watching, and it's time for the Media to take a stand! Will the National Media finally muster the courage to call out the #Meiteis' egregious actions, or will they continue to turn a blind eye to the atrocities of the #Kuki people and other marginalized communities in India?
We urge the International Community to take notice of the ongoing genocide and ethnic cleansing faced by the #Kuki people and to support our struggle for justice, equality, and self-determination. The World must not turn a blind eye to the suffering of the #Kuki people and other marginalized communities in India.
