The term “auto-da-fé” refers to the burning of a heretic by the Spanish Inquisition. In Ellis’s case here in #tmot26 he was having second thoughts about what he proposed he saw and didn’t want to be the cause of Sandy’s “auto-da-fé.”

Ellis’s feelings toward lynching, and that Sandy is an innocent man, just goes to show how much he differs from the rest of the men in the novel. Ellis does not believe in white supremacy at all, unlike the big three. He also seems overall selfless, unlike Tom. #TMOT26

Instead of being afraid of your children watching someone be brutally killed, they were afraid that “children might not be kept up beyond their usual bedtime” showing how a lynching was so common and how it was another form of entertainment for cruel, white supremacists. #TMOT26
