In the last few paragraphs, I find it ironic what Mrs. Carteret thinks about marriage and its legitimacy with “the most serious concern of life.” However, Major Carteret only married Olivia for her money showing that in reality, her marriage wasn’t legitimate. #TMOT30

With the “child’s cry as a warning,” I think this basically foreshadows something that is going to disappoint Mrs. Carteret in the papers. The baby is connected with bad luck according to Jane with the mole on the side of his face. #TMOT30

Instead of being afraid of your children watching someone be brutally killed, they were afraid that “children might not be kept up beyond their usual bedtime” showing how a lynching was so common and how it was another form of entertainment for cruel, white supremacists. #TMOT26

Mcbane reminds me of Mr. Covey in the Life of Fredrick Douglass. Both are very racist and intimidating by the way they treat black people (basically like animals). With Mcbane repeating “burn the [negro]” and Mr. Covey constantly whipping them (when slavery was legal) . #TMOT21
