#tmot31 We see that Mrs.Carteret is afraid of what society will think of her and her family for having a reputation of unlawful actions with negroes. She decides to let her Father’s actions become unknown to better herself and her family, but it comes off as selfish.

Olivia is constantly worrying about her son. I think that because of the incidents with the rattle and then the window, she will always be a nervous wreck around him, which is why she had a dream about him drowning. Maybe that mole behind his ear was in fact bad luck... #tmot31

#TMOT31 "...would have fallen upon her as the unhappy fruit of an unblessed union" (175). This mention of the unhappy fruit directly relates to Billie Holiday's "Strange Fruit." The strange fruit is not only the negroes on the trees, but the prejudice shaped by Black actions.

Meum and tuum mean “mine and thine” in Latin. As used in #tmot31, they refer to what property would be Olivia’s, and what property would be Janet’s (or her child’s)

#tmot31 in Mrs. Carteret’s dream where she ends up dying because her step sister, Janet had chose to let her drown. This is interesting bc at the time blacks would’ve been expected to rush to resume the whites but Janet refuses to do that, maybe symbolizing a coming revolution

Perhaps Olivia’s dream can foreshadow something related to the marriage/will that end hurting Dodie in some way with Olivia unable to do anything about it except painfully watch. #TMOT31

The fact that Dodie is feeling unwell at the end of chapter 31, likely symbolizes that something bad is going to happen in the upcoming chapters, as the child often acts as the catalyst for foreshadowing negative events. #tmot31

It seems that as the will of Mars Sam was released and other information was exposed (including Julia and his marriage), Olivia’s mental health is deteriorating. This is similar to how Dimmesdale went insane as his crime of adultery was exposed. #tmot31
