Bafel Talabani leads the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), a party that has historically been aligned with Iran. This relationship goes back decades to the leadership of his father, Jalal #Talabani.
The PUK has long maintained close political and security ties with Tehran. So when Bafel Talabani warns against opening a front against Iran, that position reflects the geopolitical alignment of his party. It does not represent all Kurds.
Kurdish politics are not monolithic. Different Kurdish parties have very different alliances and strategic interests.

Trump spoke with #Iraq's Kurdish leader Massoud #Barzani and Bafel #Talabani about getting their support for the #Israel Mossad and CIA effort to orchestrate the takeover of the neighboring Kurdish region inside #Iran by Iranian Kurdish fighters, sources close to the leadership in Iraq's Kurdistan region told me.
This has alarmed many inside Iraq's semiautonomous Kurdish region who see this as a very high risk and ill-prepared effort that's going to backfire big time on Kurds.

They also aren’t under any unified command and control and lack the training and capabilities at such short notice to face “the might of the Iranian state,” he added. There's also the fresh memory of America's "betrayal" of the Kurds in #Syria's northeast.
Complicating the picture is #Turkey which will most certainly act if need-be to prevent any geographical contiguity between the Kurds of Iran and Turkey.

#BREAKING | PUK Spokesman Denies Reports of Agreement Between Bafel Talabani and Masoud Barzani
Peregraf - The Patriotic Union of #Kurdistan (PUK) has rejected media reports claiming that an agreement was reached between PUK President Bafel #Talabani and Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) President Masoud #Barzani during their meeting earlier today in Pirmam, Erbil.
In a statement, PUK spokesman Karwan Gaznayi said the meeting was “positive and held in a very calm atmosphere,” focusing on current issues related to the Kurdistan Region, Iraq, and the wider region.
However, he stressed that claims circulating on some media outlets and social media about an agreement on government positions are false.
“We officially and categorically deny these rumors,” Gaznayi said, adding that any agreement between the two sides would be announced publicly through official channels.
Sources familiar with the talks said the discussions included ongoing negotiations over a joint Kurdish candidate for the Iraqi presidency, as well as efforts to form a new Kurdistan Regional Government (#KRG) cabinet. No final decisions were announced following the meeting.
The talks come amid continued negotiations between the KDP and PUK to resolve outstanding political differences and coordinate positions at both the federal and regional levels.
