Bob Levinson, an American Jew, can be presumed to have been an attractive hostage not merely for Iran, but for those eager to play negotiator with the illegitimate regime in #Tehran… including people like Rob Malley, whose father, Selim Ménache (AKA Sélim Malek, Simon Malley) was an Egyptian-Algerian turned French-American Jew with Palestinian sympathies.
It’s crucial to understand how Iranian intelligence — #VAJA/#VEVAK — might’ve learned that Bob Levinson was visiting Kish Island and that he was anything more than an standard retiree tourist. There must have been a leak or #OPSEC failure for the Iranians to know that abducting him would give them more leverage than abducting any other random retiree tourist.
While there’s much about the @FBI’s Levinson case which remains shrouded in mystery, and while it isn’t yet clear how Malley may have had insight into Levinson’s work (as he would’ve with Michael #Kovrig and Elizabeth #Tsurkov), there *is* someone who would’ve had that insight.
From 2002 until 2008, Malley’s roommate at #Paris’ École Jeannine Manuel — Antony #Blinken — served as Democratic Staff Director for the U.S. Senate’s Committee on Foreign Relations. In that role, Blinken would’ve interfaced regularly with both the FBI and @CIA (now headed by Francophone Bill Burns).
In 2008, Blinken left to work for #Biden’s campaign. With Malley advising #Obama, Blinken advising Biden, and their former boss, Sandy Berger (who advised Francophone #JohnKerry in 2004 before being forced to resign over an egregious theft of classified documents) advising #Clinton, the trio were in a perfect position to influence the course of foreign relations… regardless of which Democrat was selected to become the 2008 Presidential nominee.
Berger was also “a close advisor to the late ambassador to #France, Pamela Harriman, and helped her to enter the foreign policy community,” according to a 1997 @CNN profile of him. (Harriman had studied at the the #Sorbonne in her youth.)

As a close ally, it would be wise for Washington to impress on Baghdad that #Tsurkov should be freed, not for the sake of #Israel, but for the image of Iraq as a sovereign country where law and order are upheld by courts and law enforcement agencies.
