Questions That Demand Answers
- @bbcbangla Investigative Report on #TuragMurders - Missing Incident of @albd1971 Activists.
Seven #AwamiLeague activists were reportedly detained after a procession. Others allegedly jumped into the #Turag River while fleeing. In the days that followed, multiple bodies were recovered.
According to a #BBC News Bangla investigation, conflicting accounts from witnesses, families, lawyers and police have left critical questions unresolved. While police deny that anyone disappeared during the operation or that any attack occurred, #humanrights advocates say only an independent investigation can establish the truth.
When people go missing, bodies are recovered and public confidence is shaken, transparency is not optional. The facts must be established through a credible, impartial investigation. Accountability begins with uncovering the truth.

Questions Raised Over Police Account After Seven #AwamiLeague Supporters Reportedly Killed
-------
The deaths and disappearances of @albd1971 supporters following a police operation during the party’s anniversary procession in the #Turag area of #Dhaka, have sparked widespread discussion on social media. While police have dismissed claims surrounding the incident as “baseless”, eyewitnesses have given accounts that differ significantly from the official version.
No confirmed figure has emerged for how many people jumped into the river or remain missing. However, several eyewitnesses said they saw a number of Awami League supporters jump into the #TuragRiver near Ashulia Bazar on 22 June while fleeing a police chase. They also alleged that police detained some individuals after they came out of the water and continued searching the area afterwards.
The police account and eyewitness testimony present conflicting versions of what happened.
Key questions remain unanswered:
👉 How many people entered the river that day?
👉 How many returned safely?
👉 And what happened to those who did not?
So far, four bodies have been recovered from the river, while relatives claim that several others remain missing.
The police have denied allegations of wrongdoing and the circumstances surrounding the reported deaths and disappearances have not been independently verified. Families of those who died or remain missing continue to seek answers about what happened and whether those responsible, if any, will be held accountable.

"The Turag Killings"
written by Shamim Ahmed 👇
Following the recovery of the bodies of three missing Awami League activists from the #Turag River, the same educated group that had played a prominent role in the events leading up to July and August quickly mobilized across the country to dismiss the incident as nothing more than a rumor. Even after the facts became clear, the government, police, and administrative authorities reportedly obstructed media coverage while orchestrating a coordinated campaign on social media to suppress news of the killings. Their efforts ultimately unraveled when a national #newspaper published an investigative report confirming the incident.
It has now been #confirmed that the partially decomposed bodies of three Awami League activists were recovered from the Turag River. Ironically, the confirmation came from a newspaper that had itself been #associated with the political forces involved in the July August 2024 conspiracy. According to the report, the victims were Mohammad Suman and Arif Hasan Rakib of Ranabhola in Turag, and Rony Molla of Monipur Mollapara in the capital. Information identifying all three as Awami League activists had already circulated widely on social media. They had reportedly participated in the Awami League's #anniversary procession on 22 June 2026 before disappearing. It is now alleged that they were first #abducted and later murdered. As Awami League supporters and activists raised the issue online, members of the BNP Jamaat aligned #civil society attempted to dismiss the reports as fabricated rumors.
Although the newspaper published the story cautiously, it nevertheless revealed that family members had requested journalists not to ask questions and had remained silent about the deaths. The nature of the reporting itself suggests that the BNP government sought to keep the killings out of public view. While both the police and the Fire Service officially denied recovering any bodies, the newspaper independently confirmed the recoveries through officials from the Fire Service responsible for the Turag River area as well as two river police outposts. Four additional activists are still reported missing.
It is almost unimaginable that three members of the political party that led Bangladesh's struggle for independence could allegedly be killed simply for participating in the party's anniversary procession. Their families are reportedly being pressured to register the deaths as accidental rather than as homicides. Those speaking publicly about the killings have allegedly been threatened with arrest, enforced disappearance, and even death. Meanwhile, the police have continued to promote what critics describe as the false narrative that the victims drowned while swimming.
This should be considered as the most brutal #organized #politicalkilling since the BNP assumed power. Awami League President Sheikh Hasina has stated that those responsible for these killings will face justice in due course. There is little to say to those BNP supporters who continue to deny or trivialize these horrific killings. Such reactions, unfortunately, have become predictable.
Regrettably, however, the BNP should remember an enduring truth: every action has consequences, and every dog has his day.

#Turag is said to be stained with the blood of Suman, Ariful, and Biplob. Three #AwamiLeague and #ChhatraLeague activists—whose organizations are currently banned by executive order—were allegedly tortured, their bodies severely mutilated, and then dumped into the river.
Eight #BNP leaders and activists have been accused of the killings. At least four more missing Chhatra League activists have yet to be found. Their identities are reportedly being withheld for security reasons.
