Amazingly, I had this discussion with Hubby a couple days ago. All at once or spread out. Bottom line: depends on the story. Mostly, I spread it out, like a trail of breadcrumbs leading to that gingerbread house. #amwriting #amediting #WritingCommunity #useHashtags
In my current WIP—a 17k dark fantasy novelette—I took a risk.
Two early chapters dive deep into my characters’ minds. Lots of introspection. Lots of backstory.
I knew it risked slowing things down by a lot. But I wanted readers to feel why these characters are the way they are.
Some beta readers appreciated what I was trying to do. Others… not so much. And a few just vanished (RIP, beta ghosters).
Normally, I weave backstory through dialogue and action, but this time?
This called for something different. Compact story. Big emotions. Limited space.
So I’m throwing it to you, fellow writers and readers:
When does introspection become too much? Where’s the line between emotional depth and narrative drag?
Is the word "draft" applicable in an age of word processors? No scribbling. No cutting and pasting to move paragraphs around. #amwriting #amediting #useHashtags #communitiescensor #WritingCommunity #IndieAuthor #indieauthorsunite
