"Hate speech can seriously undermine democracy if we do not react in a timely, coordinated and decisive manner" - Lejla Dervišagić, @coe During the Western Balkans Peace Forum (#wbpeace), panelists shared important insights from the fields of European security and the role of the Western Balkans in that process, peacekeeping, transitional justice and dealing with the past, peace education, memorialization and identity-based violence, with special attention paid to mapping hate speech in the region. On this occasion, the report "Mapping Hate Speech in Montenegro" was presented. The report was presented by Lejla Dervišagić, Head of the Council of Europe Programme Office in Podgorica, and Milena Kovačević, Project Coordinator at @CEDEM_ME The report is the result of two years of research that uses a multi-layered qualitative approach to map patterns of hate speech and institutional (non)response towards marginalized groups. The results show that hate speech is increasingly normalized, especially in the online space, and highlight the urgent need for stronger prevention, education and coordinated institutional action. This week Podgorica is hosting the first Western Balkans Peace Forum (#wbpeace Forum) organized by the #PCRCBiH and @CEDEM_ME. Representatives of 25 civil society organizations and international institutions will discuss peace and European security and the role of the Western Balkans in this process at the Forum. 📍 What can you expect at the Forum?
