@JeffSpeckFAICP Congrats on the success of Walkable City! 🎉
It was one of the first 📚 I read that helped explain what I was seeing & dealing w/regarding the built environment. Following, #WalkableCityRules was the icing on the cake! Thank you for sharing with all of us!
3, 2, 1…
IT’S HERE!!!
Today is the day: The 10th Anniversary of Walkable City has arrived!
With an introduction by @JSadikKhan and 100 new pages of update by me.
Get yours while they last!

@betterstreetsai "More than 200 North American main streets were turned into pedestrian malls in the 1960s and 1970s, most at great expense. All but about 10 went straight downhill and all but about 30 have been expensively retrofitted back...” @JeffSpeckFAICP #WalkableCityRules
"All transportation is subsidized-the question is, How Much?
Walking and biking require sidewalks and bike lanes, but these represent little more than a rounding error when compared to the cost of our roads."

Picked up my new copy of #WalkableCityRules, today, as if I don’t have enough reading to catch up on. There’s plenty in this book that I’m eager to learn about, in addition to #TacticalUrbanism, zoning overlays, & road diets, that originally caught my attention. 📚

ليش مشروع الموج فيه حركة غير اعتيادية ومقاهي حية ونشاط اقتصادي وترفيهي مُزدهر ؟
لأنه مؤنسن طبعاً.

Cities have been "ruthlessly segregated by both cost + building type so that society is broken up not just by income but also by age, lifestyle, race. Such segregation undermines our social fabric, weakens human empathy, + limits our potential” @JeffSpeckFAICP #WalkableCityRules

Most of Ontario's emissions are the result of car dependent development. Land use decisions from municipalities, LPAT chairs and recommendations from planners can reduce GHG's. #walkablecityrules #healthy @OntarioPlanners @JeffSpeckAICP
Our February blog post comes from Dr. Dianne Saxe (@envirolaw1). Read how Dr. Saxe compares urban sprawl to oil sands production. More of Ontario's climate pollution (greenhouse gases) comes from individuals than from heavy industry: https://t.co/XmJqKrbDpr

@wrychrd @pentastich @JeffSpeckAICP For a fuller picture of @JeffSpeckAICP's views on #parking—drawing extensively on the work of @DonaldShoup—see this chapter of his #WalkableCityRules.
Parking takes up 1/25 of his book. There are sections on public transit, safe cycling infra, &c &c.

@dongho_chang Makes me think of more opportunity for play streets and parklets :) #WalkableCityRules from @JeffSpeckAICP

@WeAreHub "It all began with a late-1960s citizens’ revolt, led by architecture professors, to kill a proposed highway. This success resulted in #Vancouver being the only large North American city without a single freeway within its boundaries ..."

@BrendanJKearney @SGollishRuns @runnerKG @KostelecPlan @rightlegpegged "This project has set a new design speed limit of 45mph ... near the new high school; the street previously varied between 40 mph, a 30 mph advisory speed, and 20 mph school zone."
😡 WHO IS DOING THIS IN 2019? 😡
Send them a copy of @JeffSpeckAICP's #WalkableCityRules as well.
"If properly designed, most urban intersections serving streets of reasonable width can and should be served by a simple two-phase signal cycle. This is called concurrent signalization."
And more signalization wisdom ⬇️ from #WalkableCityRules >> https://t.co/jKapT9EkjY #LPI

Rule #70 from @JeffSpeckAICP's #WalkableCityRules is
DO NOT 'FIX' COMPLEXITY.
He points to #ConfusionCorner, saying "it should be clear why such complex street configurations are typically safer: they elicit caution, which translates into slower, more attentive driving." 😎

@Penalosa_G @BonnieCrombie @JonathanGiggs @ChelseaDalton15 @JohnAtTheNews @TOPCA_Executive @Dorothy_Tomiuk @880Cities @STRCycling The class began with Study Hall--i.e. silent reading from a few sources including @JeffSpeckAICP's remarkable #WalkableCityRules (2018).
All muni bureaucrats & politicians should take a close look at these 101 steps for building safe, resilient streets.

Graham Larkin @VisionZeroCA acknowledges @CityofLdnOnt's invite for him to speak is "forward-thinking"

“Streets that have more lanes than they need cause more injury & death than they otherwise would. The more lanes a street has, the more it feels like a highway, & the more drivers are induced to speed.” — @JeffSpeckAICP #WalkableCityRules

This week's show features an update on the tariffs and the bike biz and a lengthy (and very interesting/fun) chat with @JeffSpeckAICP #Walkablecityrules https://t.co/vV3pvGHgJv
When I edit the conversations I have with guests, I not only get to hear them all over again; I also learn SO much! #Supremeplanner" @JeffSpeckAICP is back on the heels of the intense global conversations about climate to talk about #walkablecityrules #makingbetterplaces
This is where a walkability audit for the school would be great. @JeffSpeckAICP just featured this rule (Rule 94) a few days ago in his #WalkableCityRules highlights.

“Along with urban cycling facilities, street trees represent a well-justified use of public health funds.”
-@JeffSpeckAICP 🌳🚴🏼♀️🌲#WalkableCityRules RULE 78
Here’s RULE 78: PUT TREES ALMOST EVERYWHERE, in my new book, Walkable City Rules. I’m tweeting the whole book out May - August, one rule a day. Enjoy! Or go to: https://t.co/2RtkJjebT3

#WalkableCityRules @JeffSpeckAICP "By mid-20th-century planners seemed to have gone berserk…adding more + more categories more + more rules about what should be separated from what else until the city of neighborhoods was replaced by the city of zones" https://t.co/AifZ6SPuKJ
