This is how we win.
Yesterday I saw a fantastic talk on #NaturalisticDecisionMaking. It covered all the basics I’d want to share: the hallmark features of #expertise, insightful questions drawn from #cognitivetaskanalysis, and the utility of the tools like the #PreMortem method.
What took it well beyond the basics, though, was who delivered it. They weren’t researchers, psych/social science types, or cognitive systems engineers.
They were veterinarians: Annie Wayne and Alexandra Pivoda from Ethos Veterinary Health. And they were presenting to other veterinarians and practice administrators.
They shared their still-ongoing journey of reading about NDM years ago (Annie: “NDM just stuck with me”), the excitement of sharing a field that described how they think in practice, and figuring out how to make NDM’s findings and guidance relevant to their incipient mentorship program. They know NDM offers an insightful perspective – their challenge has been implementing it into their complex, time-pressured, life-and-death work context.
In describing NDM, they drew on their first-hand experience to bring the abstract – for example, experts can “see the invisible” and “simulate mental models” – into clear, practical focus. Between them, they’ve got thousands of cases in emergency and critical care to draw from. This operational base privileges them for adding more concrete substance than I could ever bring to such a talk.
NDM gave them the concepts to translate what expertise looks like in their field, and to showcase why knowing this is critical for accelerating it in junior doctors. There was no mention of AI. No bemoaning the usual list of cognitive biases. No chiding trainees to just ape the evidence-base guidelines.
But there was also no sugar-coating the implementation challenges. And no sidestepping the hard questions: how long does expertise take to develop? how can my organization bring this in? Just an honest appraisal of the potential value and their ongoing work to make it actionable.
It was clear the audience was keen to hear more – heads were nodding and the line after the talk was long.
NDM in the hands of professionals looking to hasten the development of expertise in their own domain is a powerful thing. To quote Lyndon Johnson: "Ultimate victory will depend upon the hearts and minds of the people who actually live out there."
The talk reinforced my sense that the path to these hearts and minds is best laid by those already walking the walk. They just need messaging that connects NDM to their people and problems and operative tools they can share to show others the way.
How else can we help them?
