I keep coming back to the Cornell Chi Phi case because the disciplinary side of this is hard to wrap your head around. TWO WOMEN WERE HEADING THE DISCIPLINARY DEPARTMENTS AT CORNELL AT THE TIME! A female student alleged that she was drugged and sexually assaulted by multiple fraternity members. Seven students were accused, and Cornell investigated the case through its Title IX and student-conduct offices. At the time, Lauren Branchini was Cornell’s Title IX Coordinator, and Christina Liang headed the Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards, the office responsible for student discipline. Then comes the part that really needs explaining: according to the lawsuit, some of the accused students were given the opportunity to submit essays to mitigate their conduct. The woman’s attorney has said the outcomes included expulsions for two students, while others reportedly received lesser sanctions, including suspensions, workshops or essays. I’m not saying Branchini or Liang personally ordered anyone to write an essay — the public record does not establish that. But these were the two women leading the Cornell offices at the center of the Title IX and disciplinary process. It's not JUST men covering for men.....women are seemingly to blame, as well. So the questions are simple: Who actually made the decisions about the punishment? And why, in a case involving allegations of a gang rape, were essays even part of the conversation?
