I can barely contain my excitement! On Monday, October 14th, we will formally conclude the list of the newest cohort of Distinguished Fellows of @TheWAAPH (#DFAPH) - the highest honour bestowed upon exceptional individuals who have made an indelible mark on Africa's health systems and beyond! By Wednesday, October 16th we will formally unveil these eminent persons that will receive this annual gold medal award.
These trailblazers have dedicated their lives to transforming public health, and their impact resonates globally. From transformational leadership, to research, to tireless advocacy, to shaping policy and implementing programmes, their contributions have improved countless lives.
The #DFAPH selection process is no easy feat! It's a year-long journey involving feedback from young public health professionals, Fellows of the Academy, and rigorous screening by the Membership Committee.
Some of the past awardees of the Fellowship, include; @DrTedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, @Winnie_Byanyima, @akin_adesina #LeithGreenslade, @MichelSidibe, @WALETOM , among others, including the 13-person strong membership of @TheIndPanel for Pandemic Preparedness and Response co-chaired by HE @HelenClarkNZ and @MaEllenSirleaf.

Dr Wondimagegnehu Alemu DFAPH (@alemuw1 ), a Professor of public health, stands as a testament to the transformative power of dedicated individuals in the field of public health. Born and raised in Ethiopia, his journey began with a profound commitment to serving the health needs of his community. As a young medical doctor, Wondi started his career as a Medical Director of a rural hospital in Ethiopia, demonstrating an early passion for community-focused healthcare.
His path toward becoming a global health leader took shape with his pivotal role at the World Health Organization (@WHO), where he dedicated over two decades of his life. Wondi's leadership at WHO was marked by a series of impactful initiatives, with one of the highlights being the development and implementation of the Integrated Disease Surveillance & Response (#IDSR) Programme in the @WHOAFRO. This programme, under his direction, achieved remarkable success in enhancing disease surveillance and response mechanisms, contributing significantly to the region's public health resilience.
Wondi's journey within WHO took him to various leadership capacities, including serving as the Head of Mission and Representative in Sierra Leone, Uganda, and Nigeria. In these roles, he not only navigated the complexities of healthcare delivery but also coordinated responses to health emergencies and disease outbreaks, showcasing his adept crisis management skills.
Before joining WHO, Wondi contributed to @UNICEF as a Health Project Officer, focusing on child health. His responsibilities included spearheading efforts in childhood diarrhoeal and respiratory disease control, as well as advising on immunisation activities. Wondi played a pivotal role in launching the district microplanning process in Ethiopia, an innovative approach to bolstering national immunisation programme coverage.
Throughout his career, Wondi has been a staunch advocate for immunisation programmes. As the manager of Ethiopia's National Immunisation Programme, he led efforts to achieve Universal Child Immunization (#UCI) by 1990, setting a precedent for the country's commitment to child health.
Wondi's expertise spans a broad spectrum of public health, including health systems and services strengthening, epidemiology, disease prevention and control, and global health leadership. His advocacy extends beyond the clinical realm, emphasising community engagement for the delivery of equitable and quality healthcare to achieve Universal Health Coverage (#UHC) for all. Wondi is also a vocal champion for gender equality and the empowerment of women, actively working towards the elimination of violence against women.
Upon retiring from WHO in 2018, Wondi continued his dedication to education, serving as an Adjunct Faculty at @EmoryUniversity's Hubert Department of Global Health in the USA and @UniversityAbia's Department of Health Sciences in Nigeria. His commitment to nurturing the next generation of public health leaders reflects his belief in the power of knowledge and mentorship.
Despite his retirement, Wondi's expertise remains in high demand. He was called back by @WHOAFRO to contribute as an Advisor to Africa's COVID-19 Pandemic Response, showcasing his continued relevance in addressing contemporary global health challenges. Additionally, he actively supports the Regional Health Emergency Programme's flagship initiatives to enhance preparedness, detection, and response capacities in various countries.
In essence, Dr Alemu's life and career encapsulate a narrative of dedication, leadership, and unwavering commitment to advancing public health globally. His journey from a rural hospital in Ethiopia to the forefront of international health organizations exemplifies the potential of individuals to catalyze positive change in the world.
On 2nd November 2023, @TheWAAPH inducted 8 eminent persons into the Distinguished Fellowship of the Academy of Public Health (#DFAPH), under the leadership of Dr Ferhat Khan FAPH. One of these giants was Dr Alemu.
So, It was my great pleasure and honour on the margins of the last day of the #CPHIA2023 , to complete the circle by presenting his DFAPH Medal and induction package physically with the support of Prof @drchimezie, Dr @bernappiah (@SyracuseU) & Dr @MakweCatherine.
