#Ethiopia: Bank employee slain in public in South Ethiopia region; police say suspect in custody
Addis Abeba - Police in the South Ethiopia Regional State said a bank employee was killed in an attack carried out in “public” in #Gedeb town, #Gedeo Zone, on 21 April.
In a statement, regional police said the victim, Temesgen Daniel, was an employee of the Bank of Abyssinia. He was attacked at around 8:00 a.m. while on his way to work. The police described the killing as “horrific.”
A suspect, identified as Abush Tadese Hutesa, has been taken into custody and an investigation is ongoing, according to the regional police.
Citing preliminary findings, the police suggest the attack was “motivated by revenge”. The suspect is alleged to have had a prior relationship with the victim’s wife and reportedly carried out the attack.
Temesgen had married two months prior to his killing.
Police said the victim called out for help during the attack, but there was no immediate intervention from bystanders. “The suspect shot him with a handgun and subsequently used a sharp weapon to mutilate the body in a horrific manner,” the statement from the police reads.
The killing has shocked residents in the area, with local authorities urging the public to remain calm as investigations continue, the police say, adding further details will be provided as the investigation progresses.

On the Easter Massacre of Civilians in the Amhara Region – April 15–17, 2025
The American Ethiopian Public Affairs Committee (AEPAC), along with its affiliated organizations, unequivocally condemns the cowardly and inhumane actions carried out by the Ethiopian government in targeting and killing peaceful civilians during the sacred Easter holiday week.
The Easter Massacre:
Dates: April 15–17, 2025
Location: Gedebe locality, Enarj Enawga District, East Gojjam Zone, Amhara Region, Ethiopia
Casualties:
April 15: 20 civilians killed by artillery shelling
April 17: Over 120 civilians killed in a series of drone strikes
Total: Approximately 150 civilians killed over two days
According to residents and eyewitnesses who spoke to the BBC, more than 100 people were killed in a drone strike on Thursday, April 17, 2025 (Miyazya 9, 2017 E.C.), near a school in East Gojjam Zone. The victims were described as peaceful civilians engaged in community development activities—collecting construction materials for a school and building home in Gedebe, a small rural town.
Nature of the Attacks:
The assaults consisted of three targeted drone strikes in the Gedebe locality, alongside heavy artillery shelling in nearby residential areas. These deliberate acts against unarmed civilians appear to be part of a broader and escalating campaign of state-sponsored violence in the Amhara region.
Local Government Response:
A local government spokesperson claimed the attacks targeted Fano militia fighters allegedly assembled in the area. However, multiple eyewitnesses have confirmed that no armed groups were present at the time of the assault. These statements further underscore the need for an independent and thorough investigation.
AEPAC joins the call for the Ethiopian Human Rights Council and international human rights monitors to investigate these atrocities.

To the Ethiopian People and the Diaspora:
These coordinated attacks on civilians—many of them women and children—during one of the holiest weeks in the Christian calendar represent one of the most egregious violations of human rights in recent history. The Ethiopian people, particularly those enduring life under an oppressive and ethnically divisive regime, must unite to demand justice, peace, and the immediate end to the slaughter of innocent lives.
The Ethiopian diaspora has a moral obligation to amplify the voices of the victims and raise international awareness about the ongoing atrocities. Silence is not an option.
To the International Community:
The United Nations and global human rights bodies must move beyond expressions of concern and act decisively. An immediate and transparent investigation must be launched. Public condemnation and concrete action are essential to holding perpetrators accountable and deterring further violence.
Failure to respond undermines international law and emboldens authoritarian regimes everywhere.
Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.
The world must not turn a blind eye.
