Hassan was an energetic teen, the first boy after 12 daughters, and so close to his family. On the last day of Ramadan he was ready to celebrate Eid Al Fitr with his large family, when he was seriously injured. Close to an explosion, shrapnel pierced his brain. He was intubated at Nasser Hospital, breathing only thanks to a ventilator. However, Hassan was soon taken off the machine and transferred to a neurosurgeon at European Hospital. He somehow recovered and was discharged. But Hassan needed medication, support, and physical rehabilitation, and we were happy to welcome him and his family into The Refaat Alareer Camp. Hassan was slowly improving, working with a physiotherapist, and attending music classes. But his body was weak and broken and Hassan required treatment abroad - he was written a referral form graded “emergency.” He never regained his vision in his right eye from the initial blast and Hassan started to develop a pocket of puss and a fistula - an abnormal connection between arteries and veins behind his eye due to the lodged shrapnel. The Sameer Project sent him to every hospital, every clinic, every specialist in the North and South of Gaza, but he needed to be evacuated as his treatment was not available. All our medical staff could do was manage his symptoms, but when the 15-year-old Hassan developed a nose and mouth bleed it could not be contained. He got a transfusion, but the blood kept pouring out. Hassan died with his mother by his side, and in pain, losing enough blood to pass away in the hospital. Hassan who was a survivor, he survived a traumatic brain injury, he survived breathing from a machine, he survived the inflammation in his body, but he could not survive the neglect of the international organizations who are responsible to provide him care outside of Gaza. Today our entire camp is mourning and offers Hassan’s family their condolences. We will continue to tell Hassan’s story - it was one that did not deserve this ending, like so many others. Hasan could have lived, Hasan should have lived. We ask what is the WHO doing? What are our neighboring Arab nations doing? What is the world waiting for?

Our hearts break for Tasneem. I can't see her silent pain. Her little eye is swollen and filled with tears, her face is covered in blisters, spreading rapidly across her body.
