Just like the narrative change of the term "inflation", from expansion of the money supply to price increases, the term "Risk Free Asset" has been abused and its definition altered to fit a narrative. The term "Risk Free" was first seen in Harry Markovitz's 1952 paper Portfolio Selection. The true landmark where the term became canon is William Sharpe's 1964 paper "Capital Asset Prices: A Theory of Market Equilibrium of Conditions of Risk" In this paper, the Capital Asset Pricing Model was introduced, and a theoretical "Risk Free Asset" is integrated into the equation for pricing out risk assets. How we ever went from this to thinking Treasuries are the risk free asset is beyond me, yet I have seen it repeated time and time again by so many in the financial industry. Well....here we are. $TLT now down almost 50% in last five years. I truly hope the financial industry recognizes that this asset class simply is not risk free now. When William Sharpe wrote his paper...the dollar, and thus Treasuries (i.e. Lame Bonds) were technically backed by Gold. So, maybe we should stop using the term "Risk Free Asset", or maybe we should think of it as Gold and not Lame Bonds anymore.
