During our New Zealand pilgrimage in 2017 for the centenary of Passchendaele we visited the magnificent Vimy Memorial and one of our party found the name of her Canadian relative within minutes of mentioning she was looking and, yes, it was eerily wonderful! #VimyMemorial
It has been 90 years since the iconic Vimy Memorial was unveiled in the presence of thousands of First World War veterans.
Dominating the skyline of northern France, the Memorial is testament to the significant contribution of Canadian soldiers to the First World War effort, and bears the names of 11,232 of them who fell across France and have no known grave. Many of them died at the hallowed Battle of Vimy Ridge, the first time all four divisions of the Canadian Corps fought side-by-side. The memorial and its surroundings now serve as a focal point for reflection on Canada’s war, and we are privileged to maintain the memorial on behalf of the Canadian authorities and support the work of our friends at the @vimyfoundation.
But did you know that we also care for two cemeteries within the grounds of the wider Vimy Memorial Park? Givenchy Road Canadian Cemetery and Canadian Cemetery No. 2 contain thousands of Canadian burials, and many of other Commonwealth nationalities.
The Canadian National Vimy Memorial continues to serve as a place of remembrance for Canadians who lost their lives during WWI and as a symbol of the lasting impact that the conflict had on the country's history.
