The moral calculus here is simple.

For decades there was bipartisan congressional agreement to fund lifesaving programs. 80% of Americans agree with providing food and medical supplies to the worlds poorest people.

Elon was neither elected nor confirmed. He illegally and gleefully destroyed USAID, which did not save any money - in many cases he just disrupted distribution of supplies already purchased - but he did kill many children.

The closest analogy would be burning down a food bank causing people to die of starvation. It was an illegal act that was wasteful and caused harm. You can’t defend it by saying “what obligation do we have to fund food banks?”

@gbrew24 Iran’s leverage to close Hormuz by attacking vessels only works in extreme situations like the recent war. In ‘peace’ time it’s a draconian measure that undermines their own economy and regional commerce and doesn’t work. talk of Iran controlling the straight is over stated.

@policytensor Is this a joke? Despite the content, this is not an agreement, at best a formalization of the cease-fire - that makes the US looks like the losing party. An eventual agreeement is a long way away and unlikely to be better than the JCPOA as the US has the same or less leverage.

@AukeHoekstra Off grid solar has been the rural poverty solution for over a decade - but hasn’t dramatically scaled. Maybe it still will like Pakistan although it’s a slightly different case. India has had more results with old fashioned grid extension.

We can have an abundant and equitable future by (largely) replacing digging fossil fuels out of the ground and burning them with clean energy technologies like solar, wind, geothermal, nuclear, etc.

@rahmstorf @jrockstrom The orange and red scenario are completely unrealistic based on current clean energy adoption curves, not sure why you would include them. We probably see peak emissions in the next few years with a 80-90% drop of till 2050-60. So somewhere just above the green curve
