Between actually managing a business and then going to business school where I cosplay as a business manager, I'm not sleeping as much as I should.
So when I got home late this afternoon and went to sit with Lucy in the pasture, it didn't take long for me to doze off.
When I woke up, Lucy was sleeping in a new hole she had dug just a few steps from where I was.
That's her way and it always has been since I first met her in the deserts of the Middle East - close, but just out of arm's reach. I think that's where she's most comfortable.
When the recent Snuggles story got some local Tucson media press, some of the responses to it were just ignorant.
@JenniferEvn22 had mentioned that Snuggles guarded her flock of chickens. One person wrote incredulously, "Guarding chickens? Give me a break."
Well yes, I said. Dogs can guard chickens.
At least, good ones do.
I think some dogs like it best when they are surrounded by chickens.

@brendanmjones We had one dog besotted with our chickens. He would spend all day watching them. They would cwtch up close, especially the black ones. He was a collie but all our dogs have been very comfortable around chickens and vice versa 🐶 🐓 💜

🚨 NICOLLA CLARKE/STEVENSON FROM KILMARNOCK SLOWLY STARVED HER DOG TO DEATH & SEVERELY NEGLECTED ANOTHER
A dog was left to slowly starve to death inside her own home, while another was found severely neglected and at risk of suffering the same fate.
In December 2024, Roxy, a spaniel-type dog, was taken to a vet after being found dead.
She weighed just 6.4kg, with the vet believing she had already been dead for several days before her owner, Nicolla Clarke, noticed.
A post-mortem concluded Roxy had died following prolonged starvation and distress.
Inside the property was also Lexi, a Newfoundland-cross. Clarke admitted there was no food in the house and Lexi had not been fed that day.
She was underweight and severely matted.
Thankfully, the Scottish SPCA intervened and Lexi survived.
Clarke, who is also known as Nicolla Martin, was convicted at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court of causing unnecessary suffering to both dogs.
She was given:
🔴 5-year ban on owning or having control of animals
🔴 18 months' social work supervision
🔴 160 hours' unpaid work
The Scottish SPCA described the case as “gross neglect.”
Roxy endured at least two months of suffering before her death. Lexi was found before it was too late.
Two dogs. One died from starvation.
The other survived because someone finally stepped in.

Today the rescue world has been shaken by an unimaginable tragedy.
Our rescue friend Claire Dalton of Homeward Bound Rescue in Turkey has fought for years to protect and save dogs who had nobody else. These nine precious dogs had finally left Turkey and were en route to Claires home in France, heading towards the brighter future Claire had fought so hard to give them.
They were being transported by two British women volunteers helping to get them to safety when their vehicle was involved in a devastating accident on the motorway in Romania. Tragically, both women and nine dogs of the ten dogs lost their lives. The one dog who survived will be collected and cared for by a Romanian rescuer today.
For Claire and her team this is simply unimaginable. To fight so hard for these dogs, keep them safe and finally see them begin their journey to a better life, only for it to end like this, is heartbreaking.
Our thoughts are also very much with the families and loved ones of the two ladies who lost their lives while helping these dogs on their journey.
Pictures of the accident are widely available on the internet, but out of respect for everyone involved, we have chosen not to share them.

Jerimiah Thomas Jones Jr., 22, was arraigned on September 18, in connection to the nearly fatal rape of a 17 month old toddler in Halethorpe, Maryland.
Maryland doesn't have the death penalty.
A surgeon who examined the baby said one of the injuries went completely through the vaginal wall and into the area behind the abdominal cavity, causing internal bleeding.
Jones was dating the child's mother and was home alone with the little girl and 2 other children.

We are heartbroken to share news about Elsa.
This morning, she woke up with a drooping face and seemed confused. Adrienne took her to the children’s ER, where we were told that her leukemia has spread to her brain. The doctors said there is not much more they can do other than keep her comfortable.
She received platelets today and is now back home with us, where she should be. Right now, we are focusing on loving her, keeping her comfortable, and cherishing every moment we have together. The doctors believe her time may be very short, possibly around a week.
Please keep Elsa and our family in your thoughts and prayers. We are truly thankful for all the love and support you have shown us throughout this journey.
I’m urging the Government to end greyhound racing in England.

This little lamb, Sooty, was destined to die a cruel death at one of two slaughterhouses that had violated UK animal welfare laws.
The government has received complaints about factory farms and slaughterhouses for years—often from employees themselves—but enforcement was nonexistent. Little lambs were left hanging on the slaughter line, decapitated while still conscious, and sometimes even scalded alive. (This is not exaggeration. Just do some Google searches and you can find the video by @AnimalEquality and other groups documenting the horrific abuses.)
My wife thought that the King of England, of all people, should see the importance of living up to our commitment to care for animals. We still hope King Charles will chime in. But his estate has taken the opposite approach: targeting Rose and her two friends who took these little lambs to safety.
The jury has been selected. It's 7 women and 5 men. They seem attentive and engaged.
The prosecution gave its opening statement. The prosecutor had to engage in some verbal gymnastics to accuse my wife of "dishonesty"—despite the fact that Rose published everything she did, and even went to the police herself to explain why she rescued Sooty.
This will be a fast trial, and it has been very chaotic. I wish we had more time to prepare, but Rose and I have both been very busy. And now I've fallen very ill. But no matter what happens in this case, I remain confident that we will win these arguments in the long term. The public is seeing what powerful industries do to the most defenseless creatures on earth—and it is revolting.

Have a look at this boy, only here as we were contacted by a vet when she was asked to put him to sleep after his owner had only registered with them to do this! Apparently he didn’t like the wife and had nipped her when she was taking the recycling out?! When he was dropped off at our kennels it was clear he doted on his dad but when I said to the wife is it just you he doesn’t like she said he did like her?!
Anyway….here he is safe and ready to start the next chapter in his life.
Drogo was born September 2023. He was chipped and is now fully vaccinated and neutered.
This lad had his world turned upside down and it showed. He was very scared but gave small growls to warn us off because he had no idea what had happened and we weren’t his dad.
“Drogo isn’t a confident lad and is nervous of the world. Dorgo prefers a male handler than a woman handler as he seem more confident when a man is walking him does seem to accept men quicker. Drogo has been OK with dogs but still needs to learn on how to be a dog around them as he is unsure on how to approach.”

🚨 SUSPENDED SENTENCE FOR SAVAGELY BEATING HIS DOG

Robert Waldron has been banned from keeping animals for five years after brutally beating his Bull Terrier, Narla.
The force of the attack left Narla with severe swelling, bruising and intense pain. A vet said her injuries were consistent with being punched forcefully.
Narla’s left eye was swollen almost shut, while bruising covered the side of her face.
She yelped in pain when vets tried to examine her jaw and eye.
Inside her crate, an RSPCA inspector found no food, water or bedding.
Waldron also failed to seek veterinary treatment for her injuries.
Evidence uncovered by the RSPCA included a text suggesting the dog had been beaten so violently that the person responsible had injured their own hand.
Waldron pleaded guilty to two Animal Welfare Act offences at Cardiff Magistrates’ Court.
He received an 18-month community order, 10 rehabilitation activity days and a 26-session programme.
He was fined £80, ordered to pay £739 costs and a £114 surcharge.
He is now banned from keeping animals for five years.
