Hi!
Holocaust historian here. Let me see if I can help. That wasn't a "weird salute." It was a Hitler salute. Because Elon is a fucking Nazi.
Hope that helps!
Today in 1781, Continental forces surround and destroy a 1,000-man British army at Cowpens, South Carolina. The battle begins a cascade of losses for the King's forces in America that will eventually lead to their defeat at Yorktown later that year. See: https://t.co/HmVmuGSPBW
On this day in 1961, President Dwight D Eisenhower delivers an ominous farewell address to the American people. During the 16-minute televised speech, Ike describes the rise of "a permanent armaments industry of vast proportions" and warns of the threat it poses to democracy.
I welcome Japan’s decision to impose new sanctions on Russia for its war in Ukraine, including asset freezes on 33 entities and 12 individuals, export bans on 53 entities, and 335 restricted goods—a powerful step in standing up to aggression.
It is a significant blow to Russia’s military-industrial complex, limiting access to critical microelectronics and creating additional obstacles for the production of missiles and drones. By restricting Russia’s ability to manufacture tools of terror, these measures help protect Ukrainian lives and strengthen Ukraine’s defense against aggression.
We are deeply grateful for Japan’s decisive action in supporting Ukraine.
Today 49BC Julius Caesar crosses the Rubicon, signaling the start of civil war. He was leading one legion, the Legio XIII Gemina.
This act of war on the Roman Republic by Caesar led to widespread approval amongst the Roman civilians, who regarded him as a hero. The historical records differ about which decisive comment Caesar made on crossing the Rubicon: one report is Alea iacta est (usually translated as "The die is cast").
When I first arrived to Washington DC in 1993, Senator Moynihan told me - “if you love America, America will always love you back.”
Today, I’m humbled to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom. I know that immigrants are bridges…we build the longer tables that connect us all. And I believe we all share a responsibility to create an even better America, one where the American dream can by achieved by everyone…regardless of what you look like or where you come from.
Chefs like me feed the few, but our destiny is to feed the many. To be an army of goodness where a plate of food becomes a plate of hope…a light in dark times. Together, we can change the world through the power of food.
I owe this tremendous honor to so many people who have shown me the true meaning of empathy, of generosity, of putting yourself at the service of others. To my family, my friends, my partners…and to every cook and chef around the world who inspires me by feeding humanity every day and moving us forward…I say: gracias. Thank you!
On this day in 1973, the Endangered Species Act was signed into law. For 51 years, it has helped preserve plants and wildlife for future generations.
We are thankful for the species this law has helped recover and save— from the bald eagle to the island fox.
The people that laud Hitler as some sort of military genius always confuse me. For any good decision he might have made he made a hundred terrible ones. The Allies should be thankful that he interfered as often as he did (I know that I am).
